About Me & My Family
I'm a mother
3 Kids 0-8 years old boys and girls

When we travel, good food and adventure always abound. Our family loves to push the limit of what we can do with children. Our mantra has always been - have kids, will travel. However, this doesn't mean I'm unlike most frantic moms before a trip. Wanting adventure and being a control freak can sometimes be a lethal combination.
Our Family's Travel Personality
adventurous, independent, spontaneous

Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Hawaii
A Place We'd Love To Visit
New Zealand, Argetina, Brazil, Eastern Europe, Cambodia
Favorite Vacation Memory
Climbing Machu Picchu with a 4 month old infant in a slight and having all the locals stop us to ask what happened to his feet which were all bundled up. They just couldn't believe it wouldn't be bow legged.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Getting to the airport on our way to Scotland with my 15 month old and discovering that my husband's passport had expired. Instead of rebooking all of our flights, we decided that I would do the first leg of our journey on my own with baby. Unfortunately, we had not packed for me to be flying by myself. I could bearly walk to the runway with all my bags and a 15 month old who would get distracted by everything along the way. He then proceeded to sleep only 1 hour of the entire 11 hour journey (red-eye). It was pretty miserable.

What's Kid-friendly at Heavenly Ski Resort

Our family loves Heavenly Ski Resort.  We've had quite a number of experiences with the resort and here's our inside scoop of why we think Heavenly is the Disneyland of Ski Resorts.

"The Disneyland of Ski Resorts"
Heavenly Ski Resort has it all!  Here's a run down of my favorite things about Heavenly.

1) Amazing views and vistas of Lake Tahoe.
That deep blue water of Lake Tahoe contrasting against the white mountains and clear blue California sky is truly breathtaking.  Yes!  Even when I’m tumbling down the slopes on my snowboard, I try to stop…eh fall…just so I can catch my breath and gaze at creation at it’s most spectacular.  Heavenly has views that are totally unobstructed.  From certain spots you can see both California and Nevada at the same time.

2) Customer service is impeccable
From the moment you arrive in the parking lot, you’ll see smiling faces.  I was particularly impressed by the staff member in the parking lot who saw me wandering around rather frazzled with two young children.  He read my mind and asked if I was looking for the Heavenly Day Care.  He promptly directed me in the right direction and even walked me over.  The staff at the lifts greet everyone cheerfully, creating such an upbeat and happy atmosphere.  There are many instructors and ski patrol all over the mountain ensuring the safety of everyone.  Heavenly is like the Disneyland of ski resorts when it comes to customer service.

3) Powdery snow and lots of great runs for all levels
The Lake Tahoe area is blessed with great powdery soft snow.  Couple that with well-groomed runs and you have a winning combination.  This massive ski resort offers many options for both beginners and experts.  Even the blue runs vary in difficulty with the easier blues being nice and wide and the more difficult blues being narrow.  If you’re a beginner snowboarder and getting off a chair lift scares the heck out of you, you’ve got to try out the new covered magic carpet at Adventure Peak.  However, snowboarders should beware that the cat track between the California and Nevada side can be grueling.

4) Great food at lodges around the mountain
Unlike most other ski resorts, Heavenly has lodges littered around their massive mountain that serve drinks and good food.  They have your standard chili and cheeseburgers, but you can get some gourmet quality dining as well.   Do yourself a favor and forget about packing a half squished up sandwich. Just give in and get one of those smoked tri-tip sandwiches at Smokehouse Grill.  You won’t regret it.  If you like sitting out a couple of runs throughout the day like me, then you’ll really appreciate the deck chairs set up in the nicely sheltered East Peak Lodge with views of happy skiers and snowboarders zipping down the mountain. .  It is a huge bonus that there are so many spots to take a break from skiing without having to make it all the way down the mountain.

5) Quick lines at lifts
With the hordes of people who visit Heavenly every weekend, the lines move surprisingly quick.  That’s because most of their ski lifts have chairs that will sit as many as 5 people at a time.  Being one of those nervous snowboarders who has a wobbly dismount at the top of the ski lift, I also really appreciate how the fast lift slows down enough so that everyone can catch their balance on dismount.

6) Little touches that are so nice
If you can get over the fact that Heavenly charges a premium for everything from lift tickets, to childcare, to tubing and food, you’ll appreciate that those extra bucks you paid buys you thoughtful touches that set Heavenly apart.  In the women’s bathroom, you’ll find tampons in each stall just in case you have an emergency.  Imagine lugging your whole sorry self and gear all the way back to the parking lot to find those tampons you left in the car.  At Heavenly, they’ve got you covered.   Another nice touch was that free cup of hot cocoa that greeted me and the kids as we were heading back to the parking lot after a long day on the slopes. Boy, did that cup of hot cocoa avert a near meltdown!

All in all, I can say that Heavenly is my favorite ski resort to date.  For most families, bearing the cost of a family’s lift tickets and ski school can be daunting.  It’s hard to think that paying a premium for your ski vacation could be worth it.  However, I think it’s worth paying extra for all the big and small extras that Heavenly offers, it just makes your whole ski experience that much better.  Did I mention that their season passes are a great deal? It’s ½ price of Squaw. If you’ve a family who loves to ski, you should check it out.

"The highlight of our trip to Heavenly"
The highlight of our trip to Heavenly was seeing the proud beaming face of our 6 year old after being released from ski school at Heavenly.  This wasn’t his first day on skis, but it was the first time he spent the entire day in ski school.  Boy did he make some significant progress under the excellent instruction of his coach, Cheryl.

Ski School Areas and Facilities:
At Heavenly, there are 3 kids ski school areas – one at the California Main Lodge, one at the top of the gondola, and the third at the Boulder Lodge on the Nevada side.  The beginner ski school area at the California Main Lodge is set apart in an area called the “Enchanted Forest”.  This offers kids a learning environment that is all their own. The kids ski school at the top of the Gondola is less private. But what is nice about it, is that after you’ve advanced past the magic carpet, you can try the long bunny run with the tow rope. After you’ve advanced past that, you can try the new beginner run at the top of the super cool covered magic carpet. This is also the perfect learning hill for snowboarders.  (Sorry, we didn’t get to Boulder Lodge to check out their ski school over there.)

Kids Ski Instructors:
Our 6 year old loved his instructor Cheryl.  All kids ski school instructors are pros who choose to work specifically with kids and undergo training to create an encouraging and playful learning environment. I was so impressed with how well the instructors were able to keep even the youngest kids engaged and following along with the group.  They were remarkably upbeat, encouraging and patient.  At the end of each day, the instructors sent home a report card celebrating the achievements of the child that day along with what the skills they are currently working on.  It really gave our 6 year old sense of accomplishment to hear me read out all the different things he learnt to do in one day.

Reservations and Pricing:
Prior reservations are highly recommended on busy seasons like Christmas and New Years, President’s Day Weekend and Spring Break.   This can be done by phone or online at on their website.  The full day lessons are 6 hours including a couple of breaks and lunch.  Equipment rentals, lift tickets, and helmets are also included.  Pricing of Heavenly’s Ski School program expensive when compared to others in the Lake Tahoe area.  But it is all-inclusive, with equipment that’s in great condition, and the best ski school facilities I’ve seen.

Noteworthy:
* Make sure to pack warm clothing, gloves and googles for your child.  If not, you'll have to purchase them from the Heavenly store, and it won't be cheap.
* Children must be fully potty-trained to be in ski school.  If your child isn't you can try the day care that offers a half and half program.

*This review is based on a complimentary full day lesson at the Heavenly Ski School. I received no other compensation and the owner did not express any requirements that I express a particular point of view.

"My 3 year didn't want to leave"
"No.....I don't want to go hommmme!" protests my 3 year old after having spent 7 hours at the Heavenly Day Care center.  Could there be any higher praise for the staff of Heavenly Day Care?  I think not.  Now you have to understand that both my kids have a history of being very attuned to why they don't like various childcare situations. To the credit of the Heavenly Day Care staff, they scored top marks from my 3 and 6 year old boys.

Security:  Excellent
Every child has all their information printed on a sticker.  There is only one access into the classroom and it's locked except when the receptionist buzzes you in.  To pick your kids up, you need a claim ticket or photo ID. It is always a relief to leave my children knowing that their safety is top priority.

Atmosphere:  Cheerful, active and calm
Like most parents arriving in the morning at a ski resort, we were flustered and stressed getting all our gear together and rallying the troops.  But my stress level immediately began to subside the moment I stepped into the reception area of the Heavenly Day Care Center.  The staff were super friendly and welcoming to the children and myself.
Upon entering the classroom, our kids were greeted by cheerful teachers ready to give one-on-one attention to the kids.  With great efficiency, the kids’ belongings (including that all so precious “lovey”) were stowed and details of individual routines noted.

Facilities: Clean, safe, organized and age appropriate
Parents of an infant or toddler will be happy to know that there is a separate infant room.  The infant room had a warm and calm atmosphere.  The low shelves were filled with colorful age appropriate toys within easy reach of curious fingers.  I was particularly impressed to learn that all the toys at the day care are cleaned after each day with a diluted bleach solution.  Germs and viruses be gone!

The preschool and kindergarten room was more bustling.  Kids were busy at the various activity centers – reading area, building blocks, an art table and more.  There was a separate room with tumbling mats and some pretend play tents.  This room doubles as a naptime room in the afternoon. The centers were so inviting, that my 3 and 6 year old boys wasted no time and were busy exploring before I was done putting away their things.  I could barely get their attention to say good-bye, which made for a calm and easy separation.

At least once during the day, the kids get time to play outdoors in the snow within a fenced-in playground.  The playground equipment was in great condition.  Only kids who are at the day care center have access to the playground.  This ensures the safety of the kids in the program.

Staff:  Attentive, encouraging and patient
Working at a day care center where you have different kids everyday must be one of the most challenging jobs.  The Heavenly Day Care staff were nothing short of stellar.  They kept things positive, giving encouragement every chance they had.  I was struck by their genuine interest in each child.  The adult to child ratio far exceeds California standards and as a result, none of the staff appeared flustered.  In the beginning of the day, they conscientiously took notes on sleep schedules and special personal items for each child.  At the end of the day, parents are given a report card that provided details including what each child ate, how they behaved, and what their favorite activity was. I left with a sense that their needs would be well met and was delighted to be filled in on their day with a report of their behavior and discoveries.

Food:  Kid-friendly and Healthy
You can’t get more kid-friendly than Teriyaki chicken and rice.  Fruit and vegetables are purchased by the day care themselves.  They don’t guarantee that it’s organic, but hey, at least the milk is.

Ski Lesson: Lots of fun
It was our 3 year old’s first time on skis and the 1 hour of skiing at level 1 was perfect for him.  They take the kids on a short “sleigh ride” out to the Enchanted Forest - one of three ski school areas at Heavenly. The Enchanted forest is exclusively for kids, so no out of control burly 6 ft men barreling down the slope at the kiddies.
Our 6 year old participated in the half and half program which included 2 hours of skiing.  At age 6, 2 hours of skiing at level 1 wasn’t quite enough for him.  The next day, he participated in an all day ski school and had a blast.

Pricing:  Highest on the Mountain
How does Heavenly get away with charging a premium for just about all their services?  It’s because, their services are top class!  The Heavenly Day Care is no exception. If you want your 3 year old to try his legs on some skis, but he still takes a nap, this is a fantastic option.  If you have an infant, short of hiring a nanny, Heavenly is the only in-resort day care that will care for your child in Lake Tahoe. Make your reservations ahead of time for discounts and to avoid being disappointed.

Bottom line:
I highly recommend Heavenly Day Care especially for little ones who you’re eager to get on some skis, but can’t take a full day lesson.  It might be a little painful on your pocketbook, but it’s a wonderful program and you can have a guilt free day on the mountain knowing that your child is having a fantastic fun-filled day as well.

Noteworthy:
* The first time you drop the kids off in the season, there is a good amount of paperwork to take care of.
* Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of meds along with a list of other symptoms to attend the daycare.  Same day cancellations offer no refunds.   Less than 48 hour cancellations have a $75 service fee.
* Late fees are steep - $1 per minute.

*This review is based on a complimentary day at the Heavenly Day Care. I received no other compensation and the owner did not express any requirements that I express a particular point of view.

"zzzzzzzzinging zuper time"
From the first time I heard about the Heavenly Flyer a couple of years ago, I've had it on my to-do list.  How can any wanna be dare devil mom resist the experience of flying down the longest zip line in the US at 50 m/hr?   I dare say, with two boys...I've got to earn some respect!

Even if you aren't skiing, you can ride the Heavenly Flyer in the winter or summer time.  But one of the fun things about this experience is that it really is 3 rides rolled into one.  The first ride begins at the base of the Heavenly Gondola which you must ride to get up to Adventure Peak.  We have taken the Gondola in the winter before, but this time round was our first time to ride it during the summer and I must say it felt like a totally different ride.  The views of Lake Tahoe without snow capped mountains was dramatically different.  However, it was just as breath-taking with sweeping vistas from every angle.  On hot summer days, the cable cars aren't air-conditioned, so it can feel a little stuffy, so be sure to take a little break and stop mid-way at the viewing platform.  You might like to bring a snack to enjoy at one of the picnic tables.  Our 3 and 6 year old's simply loved oogling at how high up they were.

When we got to the top of the Gondola, we were able to leave grandma with the boys who were too young to ride the Heavenly Flyer.  They hung out at the top of the Gondola while we continued on.  I was happy that there was a cafe at the top of the Gondola that was serving food and drinks as well as a large bouncy slide ($10/30 min) to keep little ones busy if they get restless waiting. There wasn't too much shade from the intense sun.  So, don't forget the sunblock like we did and bring a hat and sunglasses for everyone.  Fortunately, the kids didn't have to wait too long for mom and dad, I think we were done with our rides within 30 minutes max. If you have kids under 75lbs, you'll have to bring along someone who can watch the kids or schedule mom and dad at two different times that are about 30 to 40 minutes apart. Unfortunately, there isn't childcare available at the top of the Gondola.  Something that would have been a huge bonus.

...Zzzzzzing.......what was that?  Oh phew!  It wasn't a giant bee.  It was two flyers whizzing by and coming in for their landing...

Ride number 2 - we headed onto the Tamarack Express Chairlift to get to the starting platform.  This second ride was fascinating because it offered us a bird's eye view of everything that normally lies buried under the snow during the winter ski season.  At the top of the Heavenly Flyer, we got off and as I turned around, I gasped at the view before us.  We could see both  California and Nevada at the same time.  The deep blue of Lake Tahoe contrasted sharply with the dry and arid valley on the Nevada side of the mountains. Wow!  We sure were high up and the zipline sure was suspended far above ground.  The anticipation was exhilarating!  I was very comforted to see that the harness looked very comfortable and secure.  A good thing when you're about to fly down the mountain at break neck speed attached to nothing by a cable.

When our turns came up, I got strapped in. This was the first time, that I really felt apprehensive, but in a good way.   My knees were pressed right up against the gate. I could feel the tension of the the zip line pulling me downwards.  I was nervous to have nol control over my precarious perch.  But before I could even hesitate, the gates flew open and I started sliding.  It was slow for a nano second before the speed picked up.

The landing was a huge rush and the ride was nothing short of thrilling.  My one complaint - it was over way too soon.   I wanted to head right back up the Tamarack Express, shouting "again! again!"   Alas, the Heavenly Flyer is almost always fully booked.  Besides at $40 a flight, one trip would have to do.

The Heavenly Flyer is such a fun experience even if you're a little afraid of heights. Tweens and teens will simply love it if they are looking for a healthy dose of adrenaline.

*This review is based on a complimentary adventure with Heavenly Ski Resort.  I received no other compensation besides this tour and the owner did not express any requirements that I express a particular point of view.

"Expensive but the view are really something"
The views of Lake Tahoe are truly stunning along this 2.4 miles trip up the Heavenly Gondola.  The adult prices are ridiculously high, but at least children under 5.  From this view point, you can see all of Lake Tahoe and the blueness of the lake is truly stunning.  You can stop half way up the Gondola and enjoy the views.  A little nerve wrecking if you are afraid of heights.  On the day we went, it was very windy.  Dress warm on winter days.  In the summer, there is a new zipline adventure at the top of the Gondola.  It's the longest zipline in the lower 48 states.  I can't wait to try it out.
