It's Berry Season at U-Pick Farms in Florida

Our family likes to visit u-pick farms to harvest delicious berry treasures and we especially enjoy eating these tasty summer time treats.   Recently, we discovered u-pick and co-op farms around the Tampa area that offer a great variety of fruits and veggies year round!

If you are searching for some educational, fun and productive outdoor adventures with your family, perhaps a visit to one of these U-pick farms would be a great place to explore.

3325 Trieman Blvd. (US Hwy 301)
Dade City, Florida

Currently, they have u-pick blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, okra, squash, peppers and cucumbers! Soon, they will have tomatoes and eggplant ready for picking. They are not certified as organic yet but hope to be one day soon. They do not use harsh chemicals.

"Ideal for Christmas season"
This family farm has plenty of u-pick blackberries, strawberries, blueberries and veggies as well as a small farmers market with goodies already picked. They also sell a wide variety of fruit trees for planting in your own home garden.

The Christmas Tree farm is fabulous and fun!

After visiting the tree farm website, we were really looking forward to making the drive north to Dade City to choose and cut our family Christmas tree.  We drove past rolling hills (in most parts of Florida, hills are a rare find) and pastures and arrived at the bustling tree farm.  There is a small field of Florida friendly trees ready for choosing and cutting.  After exploring the fields, we noticed that the trees would not hold ornaments due to the dense foliage and also the light branches.  So, we walked over to their covered tree lot which was full of beautiful trees fresh from North Carolina and Michigan tree farms.   There are plenty of helpful staffers ready to assist families with their dream tree search.  They all gently discouraged cutting our own tree since those trees do not hold ornaments well.  We chose a lovely Frasier Fir tree and the very helpful farm hands quickly prepared our tree for the journey back home.  They shook off the loose needles, bagged the tree and even wrapped the stump in plastic so the sap would not get on our car.  Overall, the experience was interesting but I doubt that we would make the 50 mile drive for a tree that we could have easily bought at a tree lot here in town.  Happy Holidays!

"Educational, fun family farm"
We visited the farm on a Sunday and had a great time learning about hydroponic farming, picking tasty, pesticide free strawberries and bibb lettuce.  Because of this unique growing system, they have crops to pick year round...even in the heat of the Florida summers!  Our preschooler enjoyed seeing veggies on the vines and getting red fingers from picking strawberries.  I especially liked being able to pick berries off of the hydroponic towers rather than crouching down near the ground.  There were lots of locals coming by to pick their weekly goodies which is a great sign.  We'll be back, too!

"Easy to pick berries"
We had such a great time picking blueberries in 2010, that we already marked our calendars for the 2011 season!  The plants are healthy, the berries are plentiful and taste fantastic.  There are over 5,000 blueberry plants and approximately 1,000 blackberry plants in these well tended fields.  We're looking forward to our u-pick farm trip this season.
