About Me & My Family

We are a family of 5. We love to travel and to see new things. We look for a educational experience in everything we do and my we do a lot. Our kids are so used to being on the go that they have tremendous stamina. We try to plan 2 large trips every year and supplement them with weekend get-aways, staycations and a day jaunt now and again. Our kids are always wondering what the next spot will be.

Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Two of my kids got lost at a campground in Yellowstone. My 9 year old son took his 6 year old sister on a walk to the restroom 4 sites down and couldn't find their way back. We ended up reporting them missing at the camp check in and then the search began. I was afraid of them being abducted, but also of the Grizzlies which were out in full force that summer due to the late melt. It was the worst 45 minutes of our lives. A fellow camper overheard my husband relay the story to the camp personnel and she recognized them as she returned to her site 7 loops away from ours. The ranger was called and returned them safely to us. The employees were great and it was a happy ending to a potential disaster.

The Karabins started Apple picking August 18th and have many varieties. Our favorite is Ginger Gold. They are open Friday,Saturday Sunday and Monday 9:30-4:30 for hayrides and apples picking. Pumpkins start mid-September. The snack shack operates on weekends for donuts, cider and more.Animals are on site to visit with and the farm store with decor, local foods and plants is usually open.

"Hayrides for pumpkins and trees"
We started going to Karabin Farms for our Christmas trees before we had children. It has become a fall and Christmas tradition. Over 15 years ago there was a small operation there for trees and pumpkins. Over the years it has grown into quite a family funspot. There are greenhouses, live animals to look at including barn kitties, goats, horses, pigs and Highland cattle. There is also a large giftshop with home decor, candy, and local cheeses and mixes. Outside is Grandma's snack barn with hot dogs, soups, popcorn and apple donuts. We go for the hayride up to the fields for our apples in the Fall, our pumpkin at Halloween and our tree in December. You can also buy them pre-picked/cut if you want to avoid the hayride, but why would you. The family is wonderful. They are all very helpful, as are their helpers. The kids would not think of getting their holiday needs anyplace else!

The 'king' of Connecticut orchards. This is a busy place so be ready for the crowds. They pick over 100 varieties of fruit through the end of the year and this is always a treat. Come early for breakfast at the Apple Barrel, stay for some apple picking and complete the corn maze open through November 4th. this year the maze celebrates the NY Yankee and Boston Red Sox rivalry so rampant in these parts. Call (860) 349-6015 for picking times and information.
