Family friendly day trips around Tampa Bay, Florida

There are so many amazing natural wonders in and around the Tampa Bay area.  If your family wants to explore the great outdoors, Florida style, then venture to some of these family friendly favorites.

1) Fort DeSoto Park - Bring your bathing suits, sunscreen and sense of adventure. These beautiful beaches are always in the top ten in the world.  The calm surf, trees, playgrounds, fort ruins, pier, public restrooms and good parking make this beach area fun for any size family.

Best visited during the winter, you can come eye to eye with manatee and tropical salt water fish.

Glass bottom boat rides, clear spring water and undeveloped lands make this a great place to snorkle and swim.

The educational visitor's center and miles of paved trails make this an easy walk through the woods for families. You can spot birds, alligators, deer and sometimes wild pigs. The park rangers are very informative.

"Mermaids, water slides and boat rides"
This is an old Florida classic theme park!  I had fond memories of my childhood visit to see the Weeki Wachee mermaid show and knew that my little mermaid would also find the experience memorable.  This park is kitschy charming.  Bring your picnic lunch or buy some basic fast food staples at the snack bar.  The live mermaid show is adorable and the tunes they sing are very catchy.  In fact, I'm humming the "You've got the world by the tail" song right now!  There is a wildlife boat ride narrated by a local tour guide/boat pilot which will give you a glimpse into the landscape surrounding this spring.  You'll see all sorts of lush greenery, birds, turtles, fish, and maybe even an alligator!

Please keep in mind that this is an old, small, park that development nearly forgot.  If you are looking for a slick adventure for your family, drive about two hours east.

"Shells and sand"
A bit out of the way but worth the effort.  We bring our out of town friends here and they love searching for shells, swimming in the gentle waves, building sandcastles on the beach and relaxing at sunset.  It feels miles away from downtown Tampa but is only about 40 minutes west by car.  It does get a bit more crowded during the March/April spring break season but there's plenty of beach for everyone to enjoy.

"Florida's natural beaches"
If you're family loves to spend time at a peaceful beach, then a visit to Gasparilla Island would be ideal!  It's a relaxing place to enjoy wildlife spotting.  We saw all sorts of migratory birds, dolphins just offshore and small fish in the surf.  The waves are calm and the breeze was blowing off the Gulf of Mexico which kept us cool even though we were in the full sun.  Wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a nice, wide brimmed hat are musts!

The Gator Gal airboat ride is a hit with tweens and teens although our preschooler thinks it's a bit too loud. You will see alligator, snakes, birds and deer, if you're quiet. You can camp or rent nice, basic cabins in the park as well as canoes to explore the lake.

This hidden gem is a great way to learn first-hand about hydroponic gardening practices as well as pick some very tasty fruits and veggies.

"Educational, fun family farm"
We visited the farm on a Sunday and had a great time learning about hydroponic farming, picking tasty, pesticide free strawberries and bibb lettuce.  Because of this unique growing system, they have crops to pick year round...even in the heat of the Florida summers!  Our preschooler enjoyed seeing veggies on the vines and getting red fingers from picking strawberries.  I especially liked being able to pick berries off of the hydroponic towers rather than crouching down near the ground.  There were lots of locals coming by to pick their weekly goodies which is a great sign.  We'll be back, too!
