About Me & My Family

I’m a single mom with one 3 yr old boy. My two passions are traveling and raising my son. I love being a mom and there’s no place I’d rather be then with my son. I work full time and love to exercise.

Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
I’ll never forget flying home from Honolulu in first class with my 1.6 month old son on Delta. The plane did not have any milk for the flight and even though I boarded early not one person thought to inform me that the plane was not stocked with milk. Cash was still drinking from a bottle at this time and freaked out over having to go 5 hours without milk in his bottle. This old cranky lady was loudly complaining behind me the whole flight home about how she was tired of hearing my son cry (as if I wasn’t). I wanted to scream (but did not) at every employee of the airline for not informing me the plane had no milk until we were up in the air.

"California Academy of Sciences Always Delivers"
California Academy of Sciences is nothing short of “astonishing-amazing-oh my goodness-magnificent -I can’t wait to visit again-tacular!!”

Now through January 16 2012, the Academy celebrates 'Tis the Season for Science', the science behind some of our most familiar holiday sights, sounds, and traditions. Twice an hour the Academy makes it snow inside and during my visit I saw children trying to catch artificial snowflakes on their tongues. How cute!

My son and I had an up close and personal experience with a pair of live reindeer in the museum’s East Garden!! We were able to touch reindeer antler and I learned an interesting reindeer fact: lichens and mosses are the reindeer’s favorite food. One species of lichen is so commonly eaten by Santa’s sleigh-pullers that it’s called “reindeer lichen.”

Outside in the East Garden my son enjoyed the freedom to run around and burn off some energy before we headed to the hot and humid four story rainforest. The rainforest environment is ideal for frogs, not so ideal for kids dressed in winter clothes.

In the rainforest, the sounds of exotic animals transports you to the tropics. We saw parrots, bats, and butterflies as we climbed into the canopy of the living rainforest. My son actually thought he was walking through a jungle and clung to my leg!

The soothing sights of swimming fish at Steinhart Aquarium impressed my son and he happily sat in his stroller while I ogled over the Philippine Coral Reef, one of the deepest exhibits of live corals in the world!  At the Northern California Coast Gallery there's a Discovery Tide pool where children and adults can touch and examine a wide variety of ocean creatures.

February 2012 Addendum!
My son and I are huge fans of San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences. If you’ve never been, it’s the only place on the planet with an aquarium, a four-story rainforest, a planetarium, and a natural history museum all under one roof. An amazing experience for every member of the family.

When I first heard about the opening of Animal Attraction, a new exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences, I instantly cleared my calendar to go! From sex change to cannibalism, The Academy presents some of our world's wild mating strategies in an 18-tank aquarium gallery devoted to the science of courtship and reproduction in the animal kingdom. Meet hermaphroditic banana slugs, cannibalistic praying mantises, and parasitic anglerfish.

The exhibit uses iPads as exhibit labels, allowing visitors to flip through gorgeous images, watch videos of reproductive behaviors in action, and guide their own digital explorations using interactive touch screens throughout the exhibit.

Some parents might see the word “mating”, and wonder if the exhibit is appropriate for young eyes. The exhibit features the animals themselves and is meant for audiences of all ages and focuses on the mating strategies of the animal kingdom in a scientific format geared toward educating museum visitors.  Animal attraction is age appropriate for children of all ages so fear not!!

Toy Theatres: Worlds in Miniature transports visitors into the enchanted world of imagination that appeals not only to children, but to the child within each of us. Toy theatres are the miniature paper theatres utilizing costume and scenery designs derived from the contemporary theatre that had their greatest popularity in the 19th century. The theatres, scenery and characters were sold in paper sheets, subsequently mounted on cardboard, cut up, then used for home performances of popular plays of the time.

"Perfect Fit For My Toddler"
I recently experienced the magic of San Francisco's Aquarium of the Bay with my son (age 3). Aquarium of the Bay is unique to the city in that the facility features aquatic life that's native to San Francisco Bay.

This family friendly Aquarium features interactive touch tank exhibits where children can get up close and personal with Bat Rays, Leopard Sharks, and Swell Sharks. In the Invertebrates Touch Pool, kids can touch various sea stars, anemones, and cucumbers.

San Francisco’s Aquarium of the Bay also features a newly renovated, 270-seat Bay Theater. The Bay Theater boasts a 1,000 square foot production stage, a concession area, and serves as an educational resource on the San Francisco Bay. Tickets are only $3 and all proceeds support conservation work led by the Aquarium.

Some of our trip highlights include the clear, acrylic tunnels which allowed us to watch marine life swim overhead while standing on a moving conveyer belt, the mesmerizing schools of anchovies swimming in unison on the first floor, and in true toddler fashion; riding the elevator over and over again.

Around 1 pm, I lured my son to the Bay Theater with promises of popcorn from the concession stand. We attempted to watch Animated Oceans, a series of three short animated films featuring sea characters. Unfortunately, my son couldn’t stay seated long enough to make it through the first film. However, for the five minutes we were in the theater, I really enjoyed the show. It was with great reluctance I stepped out. I highly recommend catching a show at the Bay Theater if your child will cooperate!!

When you’re finished, you can take your movie home on a DVD or have it sent to you via email, thanks to their partners at Brightcove. We encourage you to share your movie with family, friends, and perhaps even the Oscar committee! Ages 5 to Adult
