Places to cool off the kiddos in Chi-town area

The following is a list of splash parks and cheap or free water areas you can bring the kids on those hot days when they really need to cool off. Most are in the western suburbs of Chicago, but a few are downtown, too.

"Glen Ellyn Splash Park"
I want to say the bottom is concrete on the splash pad, which isn't the most ideal bottom when the kids slip. But most of the time, they don't. Not much shady areas in the water area itself, but there's a covered area with picnic tables where the bathrooms are. I also liked that the wristbands were redeemable at Panera Bread for a free kid's meal if you bought an adult meal item and they didn't expire until that fall.

"The Hub Splash Park"
I love this little splash park. There's a nice playground just outside of it that you can have the kids play in before the water area opens in the morning. It's only $2 a kid. The parents are pretty laid back to about kids sharing eachother's buckets and other water toys they might bring with. Just make sure you label your own buckets and stuff cuz it can get confusing when there's a ton of kids. There's a concession stand area, bathrooms closeby, and some picnic benches right outside the splash area, which is all rubber bottom, by the way!

"Another FREE splash area!"
Love that I can walk to this park, that it's nicely fenced in but the park district building is onsite for those emergency potty breaks, that the playground has two areas for toddler and older kids as well as swings for all ages. The ground is that cool recycled rubber bottom I just love. The cool extra is that there's also a fenced in area within the park that is a splash pad. It's the old school concrete bottom but it's free! and there's a little slide for the tikes, a big mushroom water umbrella thing, and some other water contraptions. The only complaint I have with that part is they don't open it until noon for the water and with my kids naps, I couldn't take advantage of it fully last year. But going to this year! Plus, I think the park district keeps it open til dusk in the summer months when it's sweltering.

"Great little waterpark for kids!"
There's a zero depth area and then gets to 1.5 feet deep. It's pretty large but fenced in and parents who's kids are more comfortable with the water usually claim a pool side seat and observe. There are several lifeguards on staff just making sure kids don't run and are practicing good pool safety. My only advice would be to possibly have 1 adult per child so you can keep an eye on them, unless they are older. But my boys are still pretty young. There is also a concession stand, picnic area, and playground area on site.

"Splash Park"
The actual Splash park at Ty Warner is large. There is also a playground outside of it that's actually pretty cool, too. Didn't play on that with the kids, since we spent all our time in the splash area. There's a nice covered picnic area with bathrooms outside of the splash area. I'd advise getting there with the park opens so you can snag a good picnic table with an umbrella otherwise it gets very sunny. Can't remember the cost, but pretty reasonable for not being a resident.

"Sculpture Splash Area"
This whole park is fabulous! The sculptures have video screens on them of faces close up. It's great to watch the kids watch the screens to see when the faces are going to "spit" the water out the hole. All the kids start lining up and then the big splash hits. It's located right along Michigan Ave, too, so you can really get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the city. We've planned ahead and brought a picnic lunch and found a grassy spot to sit on after all the fun.

"Love this Zoo!"
We've had a family membership here for the past 3 years. I love the convenience factor since I live about 10-15 minute drive away. It's pretty large, so I never feel bad if my kids and I can't get through the whole thing in one day. They've strategically placed a few playgrounds within the zoo as well so if you do want your kids to burn more energy then just walking around, they can play like animals themselves on the playground! Several grassy areas where you could picnic, a number of good restaurant spots within the park, including a beer garden in the bear area. That one's a big hit for some parents in those hot summer months. There's also a free splash pad area in the "Living Coast"section of the zoo. So bring the swimming suits or a change of clothes for the kids!
