These are my families favorite San Francisco activities. Museums, hikes, and of course, great food!

Rent bikes and head out across the bridge! Stop at Cavallo Point in Sausalito for cold drinks and a comfy rocking chair.

This is the smaller of two playgrounds within the park. Located on Kezar Drive and MLK, this is a lovely, sunny spot for tots and older kids. This is not exactly a "destination playground"- more of an add on stop if you are heading to CAS. In fact, you could probably walk from CAS, though it was take a few minutes.
I love the down home local atmosphere. People are super friendly, and we always come away making new friends. Its just that kind of place. Totally low key, nothing fancy. Bring a frisbee and a soccer ball for the glorious meadow, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the adjacent woods (fabulous fallen trees make excellent private lunch spots), and if you time it right (~1 pm in summer), the sprinklers might even be on, making for a shrieking good time. Wear old clothes and don't worry about getting dirty!

My favorite walk in San Francisco! The gorgeous ocean crashes beneath you as you amble underneath towering eucalyptus trees. If you are game, you can walk all the way underneath the Golden Gate Bridge!

This is an absolute must -do activity. Load up your Ergo baby carrier, bring the dog, and enjoy the best city hike in the country. There are plenty of small private side trails to explore. Though please tell your kids not to pick up stuff off the ground. And for goodness sakes, don't let them bring you any "presents". Otherwise, you might find yourself the unwilling recipient of used prophylatics. "Look mom! What's this rubbery thing?" Trail Maintenance funding seems to have gotten the axe from this last round of budget cuts.

"Avoid the Weekend Rush!"
My family spent a weekend staycation in San Francisco, and decided to ride the cable cars on Sunday. Well, we got down to the Powell and Market turntable, but ticket line was 30 minutes long, and the line to board the cars was another hour! So, we scrapped our plans and decided to come back mid-week.
In hind site, we should have gone to one of the cable car stops on Hyde- away from bustling Union Square- where there are fewer tourists and therefore much shorter lines.

Close to Union Square- makes a great walking tour and its fun to amble between dim sum cafe's and get cha xiao bao (bbq pork buns) on the go! We especially love the egg custards- IF you can get them fresh from the oven!

After biking (or driving) across the Golden Gate Bridge, there is no better stop than an iced tea and soda break at Cavallo Point! Sit on the expansive porches, and enjoy a well-earned rest in view of the most beautiful bridge in the world.

"Let your stress melt away..."
This is our families favorite Staycation! Both the historic and contemporary rooms are lovely, though with kids, the historic rooms may be more user friendly. The gracious white houses surround a massive sporting green, perfect for frisbee throwing, soccer matches, and mud wrestling. The welcoming wrap-around porches simply beg for you to sink into a rocking chair with a cup of tea and watch your kids kill each other. Just turn to the stranger gawking next to you and say "Kids these days. I wonder who they belong to?". After you patch up the kids, head out on the trail to explore the Marin Headlands. Just walk right under the Golden Gate Bridge and you are on your way.

Since no visit to San Francisco is complete without walking along Crissy Field, you might as well stop in at House of Air and get your jump on while you're at it!

"Bouncy Fun in Crissy Field"
This super clean, bright and airy indoor trampoline park is housed in an old Presidio airplane hanger, just under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Parents and kids ages 4+ will both have a blast jumping and flipping around for an hour. You will sweat, but there are locker rooms to change. It is a fabulous workout!
Women of a certain age would be wise to bring some er, panty protection, however, as all that jumping and jostling can cause unwanted leakage. There are maxi pads available in the bathrooms, but it would be a good idea to bring your own supply just in case.
After your jump time (reserved in 1 hour increments. Book in advance on the weekends because it gets busy), you can get treats and drinks at the cafe, or stroll down the the Crissy Field Warming Hut for a snack.

"Fascination for School Age Kids"
Kids under 12 are free at this national park. The schooner Balclutha is good fun to explore- you can tour the captain's quarters, the galley, the cramped bunks where the chinese workers lived, and the store rooms full of cargo.
The old ferry boat doubles as an antique car museum and also has a model boat-wright's shop. On weekends you can watch the hobbyists whittling and carving their miniature wooden crafts. Its quite impressive.
Little kids need to be carefully watched as there are rickety stairs, short railings, and lots of trip hazards. My toddling 2 year old made me nervous. I was sure she was going to pitch right over the ship's railing and into the bay.

"Perfect for a rainy winter day"
My daughter loves the CAS. Her favorite part is the kids playroom, which she would happily spend hours in. She is a social butterfly, so she loves meeting new kids. Speaking of butterflies, the rainforest exhibit is a total blast! We got to hold a Giant Owl butterfly (actually, he landed on my hand and wouldn't leave). The aquarium dive shows are good too, but geared more for older kids (K and up).
After a morning of sightseeing, the cafeteria is a welcome stop. I never thought I would say this, but the food is awesome! We had cha xiao bao (chinese bbq pork buns) for lunch and they were some of the best I've ever had. They also have vietnamese Pho soup, which I think is made by Slanted Door. The bakery is dangerous- the carrot cupcakes are especially good. Sure, its pricy, but I'm happy to pay for good food.
The only downside to CAS are the crowds and long lines. Definitely plan to get there when it opens and buy tickets in advance or just purchase a yearly membership.
