Balboa Island
Newport Beach, California

Comment:
Enjoy a stroll on the paved path around this island in the middle of Newport Harbor. The houses are beautiful to see and many people enjoy walking around this island that is approximately 2 miles around. Stop at Wilma's Patio for lunch or top off your excursion with a famous chocolate dipped frozen banana at Balboa Bars. Kids love taking the pedestrian/3 car ferry from the island to the Balboa Fun Zone on the Balboa Peninsula.

"Boardwalks and Ice Cream"
After you drive across the bridge on Jamboree Rd. and find a place to park on this beautiful little island, enjoy walking on the boardwalk.  You will see beautiful homes, docks, boats, Newport Bay, and a street with fun shops to explore.  My kids enjoy walking along the sand and picking up shells while we push the stroller along the boardwalk (which is constructed from cement).  You must check out the ice cream at Balboa Bars, or enjoy a yummy lunch at Wilma's Patio.

Travel the ferry by car or as a pedestrian to the other side of the bay which is Balboa/Newport Peninsula.  There you will find Balboa Funzone which includes a ferris wheel, carousel and an arcade.

The beauty of this place is amazing with the sunlight, beautiful boats and amazing houses.

Grab a picnic lunch and head down to the tidepools of Corona Del Mar at the end of Poppy Street. The view is amazing of a little cove beach with wide stretches of sand and rocky cliffs.

"Not my favorite"
Honestly, Corona Del Mar Beach is not my favorite Orange County Beach.  I'm referring to what the locals call "Big Corona".  Laguna Beach is much more beautiful and cheaper to visit.  The price of parking in the large parking lot at Corona is near $15 and seems to go up each year.  The plus side of this beach is parking close to the sand and water, restrooms, showers, and small waves that are nice for young kids.  This beach can be very crowded on weekends and holidays.

"Little Corona" is a different story.  This is one of the most beautiful beaches ever.  Access this beach from the end of Poppy in CDM.  Parking is free in the neighborhoods.  Come early enough in the day to find a spot.  Beautiful sand, rocks that frame the beach, tide pools and a bathroom (not so clean).  The hike up the hill as you return from the beach can be exhausting so be sure to save energy for getting home!

"Yummy Fish"
Papa, Daddy and our 2 oldest boys (7,9) went on a half day fishing trip which was a perfect length of time and a bit cheaper.  They loved the experience of being on a boat on the ocean and trying to reel in a fish.  The bummer was that the boys didn't catch much and the ones that Papa and Daddy did were not large enough to keep.  The most fish they saw were the hundreds of live bait fish that the boat stopped to pick up on their way out of the harbor.
One couple on the boat didn't want to keep their sea bass that they caught so the boys got to bring home fish for dinner, and it was delicious!

Take this fishing trip for the fun adventure of being together on a fun boat with a fun activity.  If you get to bring home fish, it's a bonus!

There is a galley on the boat where you can purchase delicious breakfast burritos and burgers.

Fishing tackle for rent.  13 and older are required to have a fishing license.

Grab a picnic lunch and enjoy the quiet beauty of this regional park under large oak trees. Picnic tables, playgrounds, a nature center and hiking trails are available to enjoy.

"Oak trees"
I am in love with large, knobby oak trees, and this park satisfies my desire to explore them and see them.  Just driving down Live Oak Canyon Road is a treat as it is covered in a tunnel of oak trees.

O'Neill Regional Park has many fun and varied elements to it's diverse area.  Some of our favorites are:
* Parking under the large oaks and exploring the dry creek bed next to Live Oak Canyon Road (separated by a rock wall) and playing hide-and-go seek behind the trees.  It's especially beautiful in spring covered with green.  To get to this area, make a sharp right turn after the entrance.
* Hiking up to the Overlook on the Vista Trail.  Access trail head at the end of the road that starts by making a sharp right turn after the entrance.  Trail is approx. 3/4 miles and is a good 300 feet of elevation.
* Playing at the playground near the center of the park.
* Climbing the sycamore trees located throughout the park
* Playing in the Trabucco Creek bed which borders the campground and playground.
* Exploring the small nature and butterfly trails near the playground.

We have yet to visit the nature center because we haven't been to the park on a weekend, but I'm sure it's great too.
