Military/Veteran Museums and Memorials on Gulf Coast

There are a number of Military and Veteran museums and memorials on the Gulf Coast that you can visit with children.  It will open up the door for discussion and provide an activity where you can learn together as a family.

This museum is one of the largest aviation museums in the country. There are exhibits that are hands-on to keep the kids entertained as well as exhibits that will interest the adults.

"Fly an airplane or meet a Blue Angel!"
One of our favorite places to go on a rainy day is the National Museum of Naval Aviation.  The first place my kids head are the Cockpit Trainers were we can all climb in and out of airplane and helicopter cockpits.  The kids love to see if there is a new IMAX movie playing and look at all the planes hanging from the ceiling.  When the Blue Angels are home, check the schedule to see when you can view their morning practices.  After practice, you can even meet the Blues and get their autographs.  Perfect for the little (or big) pilot in your household!

Visit this pre-Civil War fort and learn more about defending the Pensacola Bay. The fort is on the Gulf Islands National Seashore and the kids will love to visit the beach after exploring the fort.

"Open for business!"
**This area is open for business! Camping, the fort, etc are open.

Although Ft. Pickens is a wonderful place to take the family, there are many parts of the state park that are still closed due to Hurricane Ivan in 2004.  They are currently working on the roads that lead in and out of the park, but at this time the only way in and out of the park is on foot or by water taxi.  It can be a bit of a hike.  Camping has reopened, is inexpensive and sites are available on a first come, first serve basis.  We stayed at the Ft. Pickens campsite for the 2004 Blue Angels beach show.  It was nice to just walk out to the water to watch the air show and then have a “home” to go walk back to afterwards!
