MLK Day – Lift Every Voice on Jan 16. 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Enjoy performances by regional choirs and a screening of the PBS documentary “Not in Our Town: Light in the Darkness,” which has sparked a national movement to highlight communities working to stop hate. A post-screening panel discussion will explore the issues raised by the film and the connections to the ideals of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The West Shore Café & Inn MLK package is called the Stay & Play package and includes the following. A no minimum night stay rate in their standard room at $179 per night including either 2 lift tickets to Homewood Mountain Resort or a $50 credit to West Shore Café (standard room fits up to family of four) In addition, January is learn to Ski/Snowboard Month at the Homewood Mountain resort and offers first-time skiers and riders over the age of 13, a two and a half hour lesson, beginner lift tick and rental gear for just $44. For families with younger ones, Homewood also has a groomed Family Snow Play Area at the North Lodge, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the resort is open. Snow Play tickets are $10 per day, and families are welcome to bring their own soft-plastic sleds, or rent them at the Homewood equipment rental center for $10.

Join the Northern California Martin Luther King Jr. Community Foundation and the American Red Cross in celebrating Dr. King’s legacy on January 16, 2012! Each year on the third Monday in January, over 15,000 attendees come to San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Gardens to attend concerts, participate in various festivals and a parade, and receive free admission to several San Francisco museums. This is a huge event--one of the biggest to celebrate Dr. King in the United States

Vallejo Branch of the NAACP will sponsor the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Program Celebration at Hogan Middle School. The parade will start at 9:00 am at Tuolumne and Tennessee Street and will conclude at Hogan Middle School with a Celebration Program.

Glide Memorial United Methodist Church to host special Sunday Celebrations in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with poetry, music and words from Reverend Cecil Williams.

On January 18, 2010, in honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., students, teachers, parents and the larger community will be marching from Jefferson Elementary School to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. After the march, a program will begin at King Middle School. The program will include dance, song poetry, storytelling and other performances.

Be part of the national day of service honoring King by doing hands-on service in the local community. Projects include cooking & serving meals at shelters; restoring habitats, visiting seniors, and making toys and joke books for hospitalized children. January 16. Project locations and times vary. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Monday, January 16, 2012 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Join us for a special celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Create a self-portrait to add to our Freedom Bus. Listen to a special storytime with books about Dr. King's life and the values he advocated. Quotes from his writing and speeches will be mounted throughout the Museum to help your family think about how to celebrate this important holiday.

The Museum of the African Diaspora celebrates King’s birthday with free admission, films about the civil rights leader and an education fair with representatives of historically black colleges and universities. Visitors are welcome to add to a chalk-drawing mural in front of the museum with the theme “What is Your Dream?" January 16, at 11 am-5 pm. Freedom Train The Freedom Train ride, hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Association of Santa Clara Valley, from San Jose to San Francisco, CA is made each year to commemorate the historic 1965 March from Selma to Montgomery. Riders board the train in San Jose for a peaceful journey to San Francisco, with stops in Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, San Mateo. Once in San Francisco riders may participate in a march, hosted by the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation, to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The Freedom Train is 2011 Departure Stations & Times: San Jose – 9:30am Sunnyvale – 9:45am Palo alto – 9:59am San Mateo 10:22am Arrives at San Francisco at 10:55am Please arrive at your station 30 minutes before departure. There will be no special southbound service. However, Freedom Train tickets will be accepted as valid fare media on southbound trains departing San Francisco after 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $10 each and must be purchased in advance. Ticket sales are through the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Association of Santa Clara Valley.
