Kid-friendly Museum Exhibits in 2010 - San Francisco

Several museums in San Francisco are hosting wonderful exhibitions that the whole family will enjoy visiting. The exhibitions are quite diverse ranging from learning and observing carnivorous plants to discovering the fabulous world of Pixar drawings.

Chomp 2! Return of the Carnivorous Plants. May 7 to October 31, 10. I have no doubt that children will enjoy discovering the beautiful meat-eating plants and all their secrets. They will be on display for you to observe but do not let your fingers come to close to them!

"Very interesting with always interesting exhibitis"
We love the Conservatory of Flowers. It is located in the beautiful Golden Gate Park and if you go on a Sunday, you will not have to share the park with cars. The Conservatory is on the small side but we keep coming back because they have wonderful exhibitions.  My children are still talking of the Butterflies exhibit they saw years ago. We walked in butterflies heaven.
Right now and till April 18,2010, they are hosting the Golden Gate Express Garden Railway. It is a miniature railway layout, with a train driving along the San Francisco landmarks. This is simply amazing.  Love the sounds and the fog! Their attention to details is amazing and we loved that they reuse, recycle, and repurposed materials.
We had lots of fun playing a game of I SPY.
Do not miss it.

Living In Space about the International Space Station May 29 - August 15, 2010. Discover what it would be to work, play, and live aboard the International Space Station by doing numerous activities and games. Children will even be able to experience a simulation of conducting a space vehicle outside the Space Station by wearing similar gloves and tools than those used by the astronauts. Best for children 10 and under

"Very charming kid place"
We have not been many times to the Bay Area Discovery Museum but every time we did, my children always had a great time. There have often special performances going on. The indoors exhibitions are really interesting and the indoors ones will keep your children busy for a long time while you relax, admiring the view. They are free every December 26th so that is a good moment to check them out,.

"A disappointment"
With all that money and that buzz, how come we still prefer the old Academy of Sciences? So much space and so little to discover. Granted: the Rainforest is really nice and we all liked the science/screens area. But overall, there is not much space to navigate in the rainforest exhibits and the aquarium.  The living roof is nice but well, just nice. The penguins could have benefited from a bigger exhibit and why keep the savana exhibition the way it was when you changed everything else?
I have two free tickets and I can not persuade my children go back...

Very Postmortem: Mummies and Medicine till October 31, 2010 Mummies have been examined thoroughly and gave the scientists so much information on how the Egyptians lived. It is a different way to learn about Ancient history.

"Not for toddlers"
The Legion of Honor is a beautiful museum with gorgeous grounds and a wonderful view of the bay. However, the pieces showcased there are more for older children than younger children. I would go when they have a nice exhibition. We went to see the French Jewelry Exhibition (XIX century). My two daughters 9 and 6 at the time, were fascinated.

Hot Pink Flamingos Newly open exhibition The exhibition is about flamingos but also about seat turtles, jellyfish, and coral reef animals. It will teach children about the animals but also how to protect the oceans and reduce their carbon footprint.

"Interesting and fun"
It is hard to pick that we liked best: the jellyfish, the otters (do not miss the feeding!), the sharks, the eels (ugly but fascinating to watch) or the divers cleaning the windows!!!!
One of the places in the Bay Area that you do not want to miss. The whole family will have a nice time.

Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay May 22, 2010 — September 6, 2010 Part of the Orsay Museum in Paris is being renovated and the masterpieces are being shown in two shows at the DeYoung. Do not miss showing your children those beautiful paintings since you won’t have to travel all the way to France to see the Real Thing.

"An enjoyable experience"
The DeYoung is located in the beautiful Golden Gate Park so there is plenty of things to do after the museum visit. We were not into the American impressionism but we really enjoyed the rest of the art: primitive, African, and especially the Glass Art. My kids really spent a while admiring them. There are plenty of pieces that will fascinate the children and will make the visit to this museum a very pleasant one. Do not forget to take the elevator to the Observatory Tower: San Francisco at your feet!
Avoid their parking garage: no validation and expensive.
