About Me & My Family

I have lived on Oahu for 10 years now but originally grew up in Colorado. My oldest is the girl, my youngest the little guy. We love just about anything new, really enjoy age-appropriate outdoor adventures, and our measure for a good day is based on how few times the little guy wets his pants (the best places to visit result in zero accidents - he is either already wet so we don't notice or there is a bathroom around every corner).

Kauai Farmer's Markets

Kauai is known as the Garden Isle. Gardens produce stuff to eat and Kauai most definitely has yummy eats from local sellers, many offering organic produce as well as extras (crafts, meat, eggs). My list is in schedule order. The farmer's markets are small, but offer a variety of produce not often seen on the mainland. They are generally crazy, so keep the kids close, this is most likely the most commotion you will see on your whole trip to Kauai.

"Small, nice variety"
The Koloa Farmer's market is small, like most on Kauai, but definitely had a nice variety. The kids loved being able to play on the ballpark and the surrounding area and made some friends along the way. And the chickens of course were their favorite attraction.

"Parking lot location, not my fav"
This was not one of my favorites. The produce didn't seem as fresh, very little organic and overall the market wasn't very crowded. On top of that, the parking lot location was not attractive either. While it was roped off, it was still a parking lot. There were cars, and street sounds. The kids were ready to leave in about two minutes or arriving...so we did.

"So much going on, fun but crazy."
Be there early with your running shoes!  Consumers are not allowed in until the actual start of the allowed selling period.  This means that people dash in as soon as the rope goes down.  Not quite as much of a foot race as the Koloa Sunshine Market- but close.  Good place to look for Organic Produce.  About 50%-75% of the farmers can have Organic Produce, depending on who's there at any given market.  Run by people who sell the flowers at the entrance, so no other flowers sold there.  Farmers do not need Sunshine Market permits to sell at this market, and the market fees are paid by the farmers on a per market basis.  Non-food items sold there occasionally as well, such as handmade jewelry made out of materials from nature (shells, seeds, etc.).  Most beautiful setting for a farmer's market - worth checking out for the ambiance.

"Grab and go"
This was a little more of a straighforward farmer's market. A little more low key, maybe the sprinters were there, but they were gone by the time we arrived. The pickings were interesting but it definitely sparked some good conversations for the kids and some adventurous eating for dinner that night.

"Lots of vendors, fresh coconut"
This is one of the biggest farmer's markets on Kauai as well as one of the most crowded. The vendor's seemed to have more produce than at many of the other markets. The best part of this market was the fresh coconut, which I in-turn found out my kids don't like, but it was worth the try!

"Small, good quality"
This is a small market but seemed to have better produce than many of the of the markets on Kauai. The location couldn't be better. The fact that it is behind the firehouse was awesome. This gave us a great excuse to walk around the firehouse . The kids loved talking about fireman and the firetrucks and how they could just go in their "backyard" to go grocery shopping.

"Go early, scout out the goods"
This marker allows early browsing so go early and do your looking (the kids don't get run over this way). I found it best to pick one table that had what I wanted to buy and stand there until the guy yelled "SELL" and then everyone started handing money over. It was frantic. This market doesn't have a lot of sellers, but it did have a lot of organic sellers.
