About Me & My Family

We are a family of 5. We love to travel and to see new things. We look for a educational experience in everything we do and my we do a lot. Our kids are so used to being on the go that they have tremendous stamina. We try to plan 2 large trips every year and supplement them with weekend get-aways, staycations and a day jaunt now and again. Our kids are always wondering what the next spot will be.

Favorite Vacation Memory
Watching the kids lug their car seats through the airport on their first plane ride.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
My youngest got sick with the stomach bug at 4 am in the morning 1 hour before our plane ride to get to St' John USVI. We had to make it through 2 plane legs, 1 long taxi ride, a ferry ride and a 45 minute rental car ride to our villa with her being sick!!!

Ice Skating in Rhode Island

Head to the rink this winter for some old-fashion skating. Indoors is a sure bet , but check with rink operators if you want to try outdoor skating due to the mild winter.

"Skate near the sea"
The Newport Skating center is right in the heart of downtown Newport, which makes it right on the water. It is neat to skate and watch the boats rock or sea the waves crest.
The rink is not all that big by ice rink standards. The staff however is very helpful and cheerful. They will set you up with rentals in the VERY small warming hut. There are also not many places to store your shoes here. If you choose the hut to keep them warm instead of put them outside, know that they will not be secured.
The skating itself is quite fun. They play some music as well. We had fun reliving the 80’s with some retro music to skate to. Rates are $7adults$5 kids 11 and under. Toddlers 3 and under are free. Rental skates are available at $5 adults/$4 kids.
While we were there all ages were skating. In the center of the ice were some local excellent figure skaters that my girls enjoyed watching. After about ½ hour we had our skate legs and were on our way. The sessions last for 3 hours. I CANNOT imagine skating for that long. Our legs were getting sore.
The only problem with this location is that it is in direct sunlight. The ice was melting under our feet which made for some puddles, (not fun if you keep falling as children usually do) and also some slushy ice which stopped your skate when you went through.
The Zamboni was used to clear the ice when staff was informed of the problem, but the slushiness remained. It was okay. We had had enough by that time. However, my 7 year old daughter wanted to go again that night. They also skate under the stars which may have been better for the slush. Saturday and Sunday they are open 10am-9pm and 12pm-9pm respectively then at night on the weekdays. There are also special holiday and school, vacation hours. Check the website for more information.

My family and I were given complimentary admission to a skating session in order to evaluate Newport attractions on a recent trip. I was not required to express any particular viewport and my review was not affected.
