"A Classic SF Neighborhood Park"
This is a terrific place to soak up the sun and take in some classic San Francisco scenery. Coit Tower, Lillie Coit's famous homage to firefighters keeps watch from Telegraph Hill above, down the street the TransAmerica Pyramid gives a salute and across the street hymns spill from Saints Peter and Paul Church, a place that has provided the back drop for many a wedding scene in the movies.

The park boasts a nice compact playground making it easy to keep an eye on the kiddies. Positioned in the shade, there are no worries about sun heating up the slide in this playground and potentially burning young legs. And while it is certainly convenient to have a public restroom right next to the play structure, this one is disgusting! Use it only in an emergency!

Washington Square Park is also home to the North Beach Jazz Festival, a great way to pass an afternoon in the city! Many classic North Beach eateries are a short walk from this park including North Beach Pizza and the Bocce Cafe.

Tucked just inside the San Francisco Presidio, this playgroud has an amazing view of the Presidio grounds beneath it and the SF Bay in the distance. Just a short walk from the Presidio GolF Course and the base's main parade grounds, it is a great stop for a large hike or excursion around these historic grounds.

"Play in the Shadow of the Golden Gate"
Situated along the southern border of the Presidio, Julius Kahn Park and Playground has one of the coolest backdrops of any playground around.  The iconic red towers of the Golden Gate Bridge loom over the tree tops.  Without them it would be easy to forget that you were in the city!  There's plenty of open space to play with nearby soccer fields and tennis courts.  The playground equipment offers kids of varying ages abilities the chance to climb, swing and burn off energy.   My son is very partial to the rope pyramid that can also be spun around on its axis.  My daughter seems to split her time between the structure that could pass for a suspension bridge model and the spinning bucket seats.  (Honestly I don’t know where these two get their propensity for spinning!)   There’s a clubhouse and picnic area alongside the playground, both can be reserved for functions like kids’ birthday parties.

Just below the main playground area are a lot of learn and play opportunities where visitors can explore the Tennessee Hollow Watershed and the hiking trails connecting to it.   Signs of the park’s reforestation efforts are everywhere!

"A Marked Improvement Presents a Supervision Challenge"
As someone who remembers the suredly lead based paint coated, 70's looking playground equipment, this renovated and updated Children's Playground is an ENORMOUS improvement!  It might also initially appear larger than the original playground at first. I think this is because the newer equipment blends into the park's landscape more while the original stuff was huge and shall we say, colorful.  (Anyone remember the purple and orange circular climbing structure?)

WORD OF ADVICE: Supervision in this playground can be challenging if you have two kids on two different developmental levels wanting to hang out in two different areas of the place. Do take a back up adult with you to manage such a situation.  We give this upgrade high fives all around though! My kids LOVED it.

While this funky little playground looks very space-age and futuristic at first glance, it also made me think of the playgrounds of my youth when we played on equipment coated in lead based paint. Metal monkey bars and tube slides are the anchors of this fun hot spot. My kids had a blast running around the play circle, dangling from the bars and shooting out of the slides. NOTE: The tall tube slides are slick and your kids will slide out fast! Encourage riders to stick to a feet first position to protect their heads. My seven-year-old shot out of the slide like a cannon ball, had she come out any direction but feet first I'm pretty convinced we would have had to make a trip to the ER.

Tucked away in a hilltop park, this playground is a great place for particularly active kids to burn off energy wandering along paths and taking on stairs!

This older playground goes for the classics --- wooden play structure, hopscotch and four square drawn on the black top, there’s even tennis courts and basketball hoops nearby for older kids (i.e: husbands).

Your little engineer will love this train-themed play area. Stay for lunch, there are picnic tables available. You can also bring your four-legged friends as there’s an area for dogs nearby.

This delightful playground has two play areas: one for toddlers, the other for preschool and up. The toddler areas has rubber ground and sand pit, which is great but beware of the drop-off into the sandpit and kids and adults can easily slip and fall down the side.

My daughter loves the name of this place! That aside, this newly renovated playground has two separate play areas: one for the littlest toddlers; another for larger kids. There's also a four-square court.

After a $1.5 million renovation, this playground now has several unique and exciting features, including: a central play mound with an ADA-accessible suspension bridge, built-in slide and climbing nets; custom-made ship wrecked boats; and a 40' super slide built into the natural hillside behind the playground. It is also now named in of Helen Diller, a SF Bay Area philanthropist.
