About Me & My Family

My husband Phil and I have two daughters, Gabriella and Charlotte. We all love to travel and explore the world! We prefer villas or rental apartments so we can use the kitchen, though a stint at the Four Seasons is also welcomed. We prefer relaxed, unstructured vacations with lots of downtime. We don't cram too much into one day. Our ideal vacation would be to rent a house or villa in Europe, rent a car, and spend a few weeks just getting immersed in the culture.

Food Trucks/ Farmer's Markets Around San Mateo

No longer just a place to get fresh veggies, farmer's markets on the San Francisco peninsula are part street fair, part ethnic dining experience.  Bring your family out to enjoy a local meal from around the world!

An epic feast that gets better every year! Our new favorite vendor is Roli Roti, which makes devilishly good chicken and potatoes that are slow roasted in the chicken juices. Amazing.

"Great bakeries and prepared foods"
We live within walking distance of this market, so it makes a wonderful Sunday morning ritual for our family.  We stop and get a coffee from Pete's on Burlingame Ave and then people watch and pick up yummy treats.  Our favorites are the Kettle Corn stand, the Afghani food stand, the Indian stand, and the french bakery.  The. Best. Pastries. Ever.

The produce is decent, although I prefer to go somewhere like Sigona's market.  The prices can be quite steep.  That being said, there is nothing like a local nectarine in summer.

Parked around the corner from the market on Howard Ave is the BEST Indian Taco Truck Ever.  Curry Up Now serves up the most amazing indian burritos.  I know it sounds wierd, but you haven't lived until you've tried a chicken korma burrito.

The farmer's market is free of course, but I cannot leave without dropping at least $40.  The food is not cheap, but it is good!

"Amazing Food!"
Thanks to Off The Grid, San Mateo's food scene- which was always amazing- just got a whole lot more interesting.

We went to OTG with 4 other families last night, and got to sample from Chairman Bao, Curry Up Now, Southern Sandwich Company, Seoul on Wheels, and Pacific Puffs.  I will always have a sweet spot for Curry Up (they catered our 10th wedding anniversary party), but Chairman Bao might be my new favorite food truck.  My daughter Gaby said the Tender Pork Belly with Pickled Daikon bun was her favorite thing, and begged for "just one more".

WHAT I LOVED

What is not to love about a collection of food trucks serving some of the best street food and gourmet delicacies in the bay area??  Food is reasonably priced (Korean bulgogi burrito was $7.  Curry Up Now's Tikka Masala Burrito was $8.)

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

OTG is situated at the San Mateo train station, with extremely loud trains screeching past every few minutes.  It was loud, crowded, and slightly stressful with 8 kids milling around and complaining about the heat .  I really wish they would move OTG closer to Central Park, so families could eat their food on the shaded lawn or picnic tables.

Although there were plenty of chairs when we arrived at 5:30pm, there were no tables and zero shade.  If OTG stays at the 1st Ave/Train Station location, family friendly conditions would be vastly improved by providing shade umbrellas and tables.

I'd also like to see some live music brought in.  Having a band would help the festive street party atmosphere!

MY RECOMMENDATIONS

Place your order online and have 1 parent pick up the food and bring it 4 blocks to Central Park for a quieter, more peaceful dining experience.
