"Great tour and fun special events"
If you want to step back in time aboard an amazingly well restored 1940s-era merchant cargo vessel which served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, then climb aboard the American Victory Ship!  You can easily explore nearly the entire ship including the cargo holds, radio room, hospital, galley, bridge, engine room, crew cabins, chartroom, lifeboats and cargo equipment.  This visit would be a great history lesson for your teens!  There's an onboard museum where you can see pictures and uniforms and other interesting details of what life at sea was like for these sailors.   The admission fees are reasonable.

The volunteers are very friendly and share all sorts of wonderful personal stories which really help the ship come alive through their words.  Take the time to listen to their tales...you'll be glad that you did!

"So much to see and a touch tank!"
Outdoor explore a shore area offers plenty of splashing and sand pit fun for little ones.  It does tend to be crowded which makes it a challenge to get up close to the tanks to see the animals on display.  The touch tanks have friendly volunteers able to answer questions about the creatures you can touch.  The shark tank is a favorite with many visitors.

"New Sky Trail Ropes Course"
One of the best aspects to visiting MOSI is that they offer new and interesting exhibits all the time.  As of July 2011, MOSI added a Sky Trail Ropes Course which is absolutely wonderful for all of those adventurous folks out there!  There is a fee for this new activity.  You can opt to go on the Ropes Course without having to pay for the overall MOSI entrance fees or include the Ropes Course as a part of your visit to MOSI.

There are height and weight restrictions so children have to be at least 42" tall to go on the ropes course with an adult and at least 48" to go on their own.  There are 36 elements on about three different levels ranging from 12-36 feet off the ground.

You are buckled into a harness and have a safety line which you can hold onto if you lose your balance along the way.  We had an absolute blast climbing all around the metal structure.  My preschooler keeps asking when we can go back!  If you plan to go on the ropes course, try to do that first or as early in your day as possible...it can get hot and bright.  Earlier in the day, the ropes course is shaded by the IMAX dome which makes it nice.  Have fun!

"Roaring good time"
If you have a dinosaur fan in your family, you will love exploring Dinosaur World which is a short drive east of Tampa on I-4.  Wander along the dinosaur walk to see lots of dino replicas complete with explanatory signs , get your hands dirty at the fossil dig, explore the  carnivore boardwalk, a skeleton garden, a prehistoric museum a playground and other fun dino related things to discover.  They do not offer food service but feel free to bring your picnic and eat at a few picnic areas including one in a cave.

Currently, they are expanding by adding 12 more acres and also building a 22,000 square ft. building which will house a new preshistoric museum. The new museum will also have real dinosaur egg fossils.  The expansions should be completed in fall 2011.

"Restaurants, aquarium and the view"
The view of Tampa Bay and back to downtown St. Pete are beautiful from The Pier.  There are a few upscale and also family friendly restaurants, tourist shops with unique local items, a small aquarium and a small food court for quick treats.  We visit there each December for the annual night boat parade and Tuba Christmas concert.  There are lots of special events, live music concerts and family activities scheduled year round.  Friends from out of town enjoyed feeding the pelicans and seeing the pirate ship docked outside.  You can buy pelican food, rent bikes with child carriers, get a drink at the rooftop tiki bar and kick back to enjoy the bay front view.  Go ahead....you're on vacation.

If your Dad is a tennis player, give him the gift of a tennis clinic at this world class resort!

"Tennis anyone?"
After opting to walk rather than ride the comfortable shuttle bus over to the Sports Center, I checked in at the Pro Shop for my early morning private lesson and clinic.  The parking valets greeted me warmly.  The Pro Shop has a great selection of new equipment, stylish clothes and helpful staff able to answer any questions you might have.  On this warm dewy morning, I was the first one at the tennis courts.  The courts were well manicured and surrounded by blooming flowers.  I’m anticipating a great morning of tennis lessons and hope to take home some new tips to improve my game.

The Sports Center has everything you might need for your tennis outing including water, towels, locker rooms with showers and new clothes or equipment to reward yourself for all of your hard work on the courts.

I met the director of tennis for a half hour one-on-one lesson.  Within minutes, he was able to identify my problems and offered some great advice.  He adjusted my grip and swing.  Wow! What a difference it made!  My new grip sent most of the balls into the net before I finally got used to it.   The accuracy wasn’t quite there yet, but the power was there.   He said I was I was one of his best pupils ever.  What is the difference between an Eastern grip and a Full Western grip?  This tennis instructor can tell you!

Immediately after my one-on-one lesson, I met with another tennis instructor for a one hour group clinic.  This clinic was the perfect time to apply what I just learned.  We practiced repetitive drills to strengthen muscle memory and I watched my swing improve.  I let my instructor know exactly what I hoped to get out of the clinic and he was very accommodating.   Others in the clinic wanted to learn how to hit with more power, correct their form, tweek their serve, and socialize.   Fortunately, this pro really managed our group clinic very well.

On other courts, I watched 6-12 year olds excitedly learning tennis in their own group lessons.  The clinic for kids is very successful.  Kids dressed in their tennis hat, sunglasses and sun screen excitedly running up to their tennis instructors made me look forward to the day when I could send my preschooler to The Breakers for tennis clinics!

It was a fun morning of tennis. I recommend a one-on-one lesson to learn new tips and then take a clinic to apply what you have just learned.  After an hour and half of instruction, I felt great about my tennis experience at The Breakers.  I’ll be back to hit around again!

Please read my other Trekaroo reviews for The Breakers.

This review is based on a complimentary stay at The Breakers Palm Beach.  I received no other compensation.  The opinions expressed are my own and the resort did not state any requirements that I express a particular point of view.
