About Me & My Family

My husband Phil and I have two daughters, Gabriella and Charlotte. We all love to travel and explore the world! We prefer villas or rental apartments so we can use the kitchen, though a stint at the Four Seasons is also welcomed. We prefer relaxed, unstructured vacations with lots of downtime. We don't cram too much into one day. Our ideal vacation would be to rent a house or villa in Europe, rent a car, and spend a few weeks just getting immersed in the culture.

Sites are accessible by a short boat ride, which is really fun for kids! Due to its proximity to water, this is best for kids who are strong swimmers. Not recommended for toddlers.

A very popular campground with lots of big trees and a creek. Sites are on the small side, but quite beautiful.

"Best Camping on the Peninsula"
We were introduced to Memorial Park by classmates from my daughter's school.  They reserve Homestead Flats Group site # 6.  This woodsy spot is heaven for kids.  It has it all- a cool river, banana slugs, towering redwoods, huge hollowed out logs that are perfect for forts and make believe.  There is even a rope swing nearby at Site 1.  We didn't check it out, but the older kids loved it.  This group site is massive.  There are miles of room for multiple families to enjoy privacy.  Despite 20 people being in camp, nobody was in anyone else's hair.

The shady redwood groves, and soft, thick pine mulch create a heavy, peaceful silence.  Forget the tent.  All you need is a hammock and you are good to go.

UPDATE:

Sadly sadly sadly, due to budget cuts, the massive, woodsy group site at Memorial Park are closed indefinitely.  You can, however, stay in the individual sites, which vary in quality and privacy.   The sites are pretty small, but they are shady, and still have plenty of huge trees to explore.  Pescadero Creek is wonderful for summertime wading, and on weekend evenings, the park shows family movies at the big screen amphitheatre.  This is an ideal "first camping" experience for Peninsula families.

Clean bathrooms and showers! Lovely, woodsy location. I did not see any poison oak on my visit.

This is technically a hostel, but since you will want to bring your own sleeping bags, I'm including it as a camping experience. Rustic clifftop houses have full kitchens and gorgeous views.

"Best Beach for Toddler's on San Mateo Coast"
This secluded cove is ideal for small children.  It is protected from wind and large waves by rocky promontories on both sides.  At the north end of the beach is a teensie wading inlet with shallow and very clean water. The sand is soft and deep with few rocks. My 18 month old daughter had no trouble waddling her fat little rump right in!

The entire beach is tiny- large enough for maybe 3-4 groups to spread out comfortably.  There are disgusting porta potties at the parking entrace.  Unless you are struck with Montezuma's revenge, do as the crabs doo doo and go in the sand.

Sadly, the lighthouse itself has undergone structural damage and is no longer open for tours.

You can be as pampered as you like- Tent cabins have heated mattress pads. Or you can pitch a tent! Horse back riding available. Good last minute camping option.

"Evening bbq. Mmmm."
The evening BBQ at Pine House is fantastic- Grilled items such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken are paired with your choice of a dellcious baby greens salad or red new potato salad.  Both are fantastic.  Beer on tap is tasty.  After collecting your food from the grill, you can set at one of the picnic tables and listen to live music on Saturday evenings.  The dinner is cash or room charge only- no credit cards.  If you forget your cash, there is an ATM in the hotel lobby.

Before dinner, you can go horse back riding (1.5 hour trail rides are $80 for kids 7+), walk to the beach, swing on the hammocks, or play on the playground.

The tent cabins themselves are quite small and not necessarily private.  There are a few that stand well apart from the others- ask when booking if you don't want to be in the middle of things.

Camp is accessible by an easy 2 mile bike/stroller friendly trail. This is backcountry camping, not car camping
