About Me & My Family

We are a travel obsessed, outdoor loving, family of four living in Orange County, CA. I have five year old twins (a boy and a girl) and I try my best to expose them to as many new experiences as possible. We love hiking, beaches, and National Parks but we also enjoy some time by the pool at big resorts. I serve as editor of The Talking Trekaroo, Trekaroo's blog.
Our Family's Travel Personality

We Just Got Back From
The new Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii! A-mazing.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Any National Park
A Place We'd Love To Visit
Any National Park
Favorite Vacation Memory
Climbing up the side of a mountain to Inspiration Point at Grand Teton National Park with my then two year old twins. It was something nobody thought our children could do and the view fro the top was incredible.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Forgetting the portable dvd player on the way home from Yosemite National Park after exploring the park all day. Tired and cranky children with no source of entertainment make for a very loud car.

Best rides for toddlers at the Disneyland Resort

We all want our children's first Disney experience to be a magical one and one mistake many people make is unknowingly taking their kids on rides that are "scary" in the eyes of a small child.  If you are taking your tot to the Disneyland Resort for the first time and unsure about which rides are best for new little parkgoers, this list is for you.  These rides are guaranteed to put a smile on even the most skittish little ones. It is also great for older kids who are still afraid of their shadow.

Yes, its a slow moving boat through a world of singing dolls- and kids LOVE it! The song may play over and over in your head for a couple weeks, but seeing your toddler's eyes light up is a memory that will stay with you forever.

What is not to love about Dumbo? He's an elephant that flies! The nice thing about this ride is that it is out in the open so kids know exactly what to expect and parents can control its ascent and descent.

One of the original Disneyland rides, the DIsneyland Railroad is just as popular with little kids now as it was back in the 50s. Besides being fun, it is also a great way to get around the perimeter of Disneyland, with a few stops along the way.

Many of the rides in Fantasyland may seem scary to small children even though they are geared to that age group. This is not one of those rides. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole and enjoy this upbeat ride.

Peter Pan's flight soars high above scenes from the movie in a magical boat. If your kids are scared of a little darkness, they may be a little skittish but power through and they should come out enjoying the ride.

This ride was built for preschoolers. Kids get to ride around in a mini circus train and pretend they are elephants or monkeys.

One of the resort's newest rides, Little Mermaid is a slow moving ride which takes riders through classic movie scenes. There is one scene with Ursula but it is not overly scary.

"Little Mermaid lovers will be thrilled with this new ride!"
The Little Mermaid ride is definitely going to be my four year old daughter's new favorite. As someone who grew up watching the movie and can recite it word for word, it was amazing to finally see the movie come to life as a classic Disney ride.

Riders board a continuously moving clamshell (which is similar to the Haunted House buggies in design and sits 2 adults or an adult and 2 small children) and are greeted by Scuttle the seagull who let's guests know they are about to take a journey under the sea. Disney magic helps you imagine that your clam is going down into the depths. Be sure to look above you to catch a glimpse of Ariel (one of my favorite parts of the ride).

Classic songs and scenes from the movie, including Under the Sea, Ursula conjuring up the "winds of the Caspian Sea", and Ariel singing as she gives her voice to the sea witch are featured, as well the iconic Kiss the Girl Scene and Ariel's wedding.  The animation of the the characters is incredible and above and beyond what Disney has done in prior rides.

The ride is slow paced and appropriate for all ages. It is reminiscent of the classic rides in Fantasyland.  I feel it will appeal most to children under 8 and adults who are looking for nostalgia.

Disclosure: I attended the media preview of the Little Mermaid ride as a guest of Disney in order to cover their new summer rides and shows. They did not request any specific opinions be expressed and all opinions will always be honest thoughts.

Basically, they are bumper cars. But there is a reason why bumper cars are still popular after all these years.

This ride is similar to the teacups in Disneyland, but less intense because the riders can't spin the wheel to make the ride spin quicker. Not for folks for get motion sickness easily.

"CA Adventure's teacup ride"
This ride is essentially the exact same thing as the teacups but it is in A Bug's Land so it is ladybug themed. I can't say that I have ever been on the ride (because I am fairly certain that I would be very sick) but my husband and kids seem to love it. One nice thing about the ride is that riders can turn the wheel and control how fast it spins.

This ride has a monster theme but the monsters in this movie are nice and the ride is slow paced and fun as it takes riders through scenes from the popular movie.

Ride a boat through the jungle and encounter animals along the way with narration from corny but funny guides. Kids who are easily scared should be reminded that the animals aren't real.

If your child is 32 inches tall, they can ride this ride as a passenger. They love the opportunity to ride around in cars from the front seat!

Every little kids loves Buzz Lightyear and this ride gives the kids a gun to shoot at targets. Even if they are too young to understand how to shoot the gun, they are happy to hold it and look at all the Buzz Lightyear excitement.

"Interactive and fun for all ages!"
My kids first rode this ride when they were infants and loved all the flashing lights and colors. Now they are almost 5 and love using the laser gun to shoot at all the targets and score points. I am super competitive and am always trying to beat my high scores. There have been some slight changes to the end of this ride after the most recent Toy Story movie so if you haven't ridden in a while, check it out again!

This ride is upbeat and features characters from Toy Story in 3D games. Kids will like wearing the 3D glasses and even if they are too young to understand how to shoot targets, they will still enjoy watching you play the games and the characters interacting.

"My favorite CA Adventure ride"
I am addicted to this ride. Yes, the line can often be long, but there is a reason- it is so much fun!  Riders put on 3D glasses and play carnival games for points. The concept sounds simple but the 3D is very realistic and special added touches such as a spray of water when you pop a water balloon make the experience special.  The ride is good for all ages and has nothing scary or fast to worry about. If you have older children, consider avoiding the lines by taking advantage of single rider. Cast Members will give you passes to basically skip the line and act as seat fillers for parties with an odd number of people. This means you may not be able to sit next to a loved one but I since the ride is so interactive, I don't think you will miss out on anything by sitting next to a stranger.
