Favorite Vacation Memory
My favorite vacation was our 6th anniversary trip to Reykjavik, Iceland. Even though I'm not an outdoors person, I loved the glacier hike and enjoying all the beautiful wild scenery. The city was beautiful, everyone was friendly and everything was convenient and well-organized. We finished off the trip by celebrating our anniversary at the gorgeous Blue Lagoon!

A lovely zoo with lots of shaded walkways and well-designed animal enclosures. Hours are shorter in the winter, but entrance fees are also lowered. Parking is in pay lots on several sides of the zoo, but you can find lots of free street parking close by too! There are lots of animals to see at this zoo- everything from bears to lions, meerkats, penguins and flamingos.

"A great zoo"
Woodland Park Zoo is located just off Aurora Avenue, near Green Lake, about 10 minutes north of downtown Seattle.

The Zoo is enormous-92 acres, divided into bioclimatic zones. I've been many times and have never managed to see more than about half of the animals.  So be prepared for lots of walking!  I really like this zoo because you feel like you're really in nature- there are lots of trees and greenery. The animal exhibits are mostly very large, with lots of places for the animals to wander.

The zoo also has snack bars, picnic tables, a petting area, the Zoomazium indoor play area for kids, a carousel and lots of other things to see and do.

Admission to the park is cheaper from October-April, so if you're thinking about testing out the zoo to see if you like it, I'd suggest going then!  This is a great zoo for the whole family- wear comfortable shoes and prepare to have a good time!

At NW Trek, you travel in trams through the park, while a naturalist narrates your 50-minute journey. On the tram ride you will see bison, elk, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats as they roam around the park. There is also a self-guided walking tour, where you can see bear and wolves in naturalistic enclosures. Open year-round! There's also a new challenge course/zipline at NW Trek. This requires reservations 24 hours in advance. Courses for kids 6 and up. Admission to NW Trek is $18 for adults, with discounts for local residents, military, youth, and tots.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to boat, hike, and learn more about local wildlife. Trails are open every day, and admission is $3 per four adults. Children 16 and under are free. There's also a visitors center with a view of the marsh and interactive exhibits. The refuge is home to lots of local birds, beaver, coyote, deer, reptiles, and amphibians. You never know what you're going to see!

The Seattle Aquarium is located on Seattle's waterfront. It's home to lots of fish, otters, octopus, puffins, and more. There's a giant exhibit in the main lobby, where you can see divers three times per day. There's also an underwater dome room where you can be surrounded by fish! Upstairs there's a full cafe with lots of food and drink options. Adult admission is $19.95, ages 4-12 are $13.95 and 3 and under are free. Parking is in pay lots nearby and is frequently difficult to find, so take public transit if possible.

"A very nice aquarium"
The Seattle Aquarium is located on the Seattle Waterfront, in downtown Seattle, just a few blocks from the famous Pike Place Market. It's a very nice, recently redone aquarium, with lots of cool displays and a big variety of sea creatures. One of the best displays is the one you see right when you walk in, the gigantic Window on Washington Waters.

My son especially liked the otter exhibit- it was fun to watch the otters as they swam and climbed out of the water and jumped back in again.  The underwater dome exhibit is also very cool, it's a gigantic dome that offers 360 degree views of a 400,000 gallon tank with tons of fish!

When you need a break from all the sea life, there's a nice coffee shop-type eating area upstairs, where you can sit and relax.

There are lots of other great displays at the Aquarium including a tide pool and a coral reef.  If you have kids that love fish and aquariums (and I've yet to meet a kid that doesn't!) take a trip to the Seattle Aquarium.
