About Me & My Family

We're a traveling band of pseudo-hippie geniuses. Okay, not really. My husband and I met early in life, had kids early in life and are now taking the brood along on all of life's adventures! We love to travel around the US and beyond. Our current interests include "extreme hardcore" camping, hiking, geocaching, exploring other towns/cities, checking out museums and perfecting our goofball-ery. :)
Our Family's Travel Personality
adventurous, curious, relaxed, easy_going
We Just Got Back From
central Connecticut
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Oahu, Hawai'i
A Place We'd Love To Visit
Nicaragua
Favorite Vacation Memory
Walking along Waikiki Beach at sunrise, snowboarding with my kids at Smugg's (VT), dancing with the street performers at Disney's CA Adventure, exploring the many hiking trails in central NC ... too many to list!
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Any moment that involved a complete meltdown of a toddler on an airplane. It hasn't happened often in our family. We're usually the parents that are coming across the plane to help another family calm their wee one. Benadryl? Calms Forte? Chamomille drops? WHAT DO YOU NEED SO I CAN SLEEP THROUGH THIS FLIGHT, MA'AM? Yes. That's us.

"Beautiful village, best suited for ages 12 & up"
If you have a budding agri-vet in your family, or just want to spend a relaxing day out, Fearrington Village can meet nearly every need.

My nearly-13 year old declared that she wanted to do something different for her birthday, but also wanted to spend time near/with animals. After a bit of searching on the internet, we found Fearrington Village. The village is home to a working farm, home to the famous "belted cows". Not having seen this breed of bovine before, our interests were piqued.

What we found upon arrival was a beautiful New England-esque village, completely removed from the hustle of suburban living. Visitors and guest of the inn were strolling about, stopping to coo at the new calves and take photographs. We felt a bit out of place with our "going to the farm" clothing on; most of the visitors were dressed in their Sunday best (or Sunday's best golf attire) and heading to one of the two famed eateries on site. There were no staff nearby, but a large map and plenty of signage to guide us to points of interest: gardens, barns, bookstore, restaurants, the inn and the shops. We enjoyed our leisurely time there, but the pace of the day was quite intolerable for my energetic 7 and 5 year olds.

"A masterpiece in itself"
Located in Fearrington Village is one of the best bookstores in North Carolina. This isn't your big box chain store. This is bookworm nirvana.

McIntyre's has hosted a bevy of celebrity authors such as Paula Deen, Giada de Laurentis and Trisha Yearwood. They also have an active book club and events calender. Before your visit, be sure to check their website or facebook page.

McIntyre's is child-friendly, but younger readers might be left wanting more. This is where a scavenger hunt or chat with a friendly staffer might be in order. While the children's section is conveniently located in the front of store, on your right as you enter, there are scores of books to be discovered here.

"Fantastic food, beautiful setting"
During our visit to Fearrington Village & Farm, we were tempted to try the highly acclaimed Fearrington House Restaurant, but with two little ones in tow we thought it best to nosh elsewhere. We're so glad we did!

The interior of Old Granary is farmhouse chic; clean, light walls, exposed wood beams and gnarly wood floors. We were sat immediately by a bubbly hostess, and greeted soon after by our server (who brought with him kids menus and crayons). Our party ordered a good variety: challah french toast, The Granary omelet w/o meat, meatless eggs benedict and The Granary chopped salad. All were served quickly and to order. The challah french toast was out of this world, and had my younger children shouting "challah!" for the remainder of the day.

OCD parents will appreciate that the restrooms are nearly removed from the restaurant itself; you must go through the rear dining areas to a separate building. Restrooms were clean and well stocked at our visit, but seemed dated in a not-so-quaint way.

Note: This is not a weekly eatery, unless you have plenty of wiggle room in your budget. Adult plates can be generous; consider splitting an entree.
