Long Beach Island is made up of several small towns and is packed full of family fun. While there are a few hotels/motels scattered on the island, rental vacation homes are more readily available and probably the best way to go for a family. Ship Bottom and Beach Haven are 2 of the most popular towns for families to stay in.
Try out this sample itinerary to help guide you in a week of activities. I left arrival and departure days open to allow you to unpack/pack, settle in and relax a bit!

reviewed on: January 07 2010
Our family visits here every year. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in their picnic grove while enjoying the fresh salty breezes.
There is no fee to enter the park but if you would like to climb "Old Barney" there is a $1 pp fee for ages 12 and up. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse wil give you a panoramic view of the area.
Visit the Interpretive Center to learn the story of the lighthouse, learn about the coastline and the surrounding envrionment. Interpretive programs are offered.
There is a short trail, the Maritime Forest trail, that is a 1/5 mile loop. This is a resting and feeding area for migrating birds. The best time to get a glimpse of the birds is in May and October.
We don't come to fish but enjoy watching the fisherman along the bulkhead and chatting with them. You can grab a seat on the bench and watch the boats come and go.
There is a paved bath from the parking lot into the park and along the water making it accessible for strollers.

We love the Surflight Theater and have seen many wonderful shows. It is a small theater and so there is no such thing as a bad seat. They offer plays of various genres, concerts and special events.
For families with younger children you can give them the theater experience with the Surflight Children's Theater. Shows run during the summer approximately 1-2 weeks per show. Tickets are only $10 making it an affordable theater experience as well. Examples of shows are Sleeping Beauty, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan and many more!

The atmosphere is an old fashioned ice cream parlor and is a super fun place. The waiters and waitresses put on a singing performance which entertains all ages.
They have several ice cream and yogurt flavors available served in shakes, cones, sundaes and they also feature "special sundaes" such as the Peter Pan and Fiddler on the Roof.
A warning to the shy....when those singing waiters return to your table with your order YOU will be expected to sing or your ice cream! The kids find this fun (and funny) and most adults are able to get in the spirit of the moment.
If you don't have the time to sit for the show, there is a take out window located on the other side of the store. Lines can be long, especially if a show just let out from the theater next door.

We live a short way away from here and so my kids are always seeing commercials for this on TV. (I'm sure they can sing you the jingle by heart). My daughter BEGGED to go here after seeing all the comercials.
Well, since we were going to be on the island anyway, we decided to check them out. We played in the arcade, which as any parent knows, can eat up your money very quickly. The kids (and the adults!) really enjoyed themselves though as we had a skee ball competition, pretended we were high rollers in Vegas and tried our luck around the arcade. On weekdays, when you go to redeem your tickets at the prize counter, they offer discounts for the prizes. The earlier you are there the higher the discount is. (So instead of 1,000 points you may get the prize for 20% off at 800 points). I thought this was a great perk since the kids were able to get "more bang for their buck".
Outside is full of rides of varying thrills. They don't open the rides until later in the day (I believe it was 6pm on week days). You purchase tokens and each ride is a varying amount of tokens. (check the website for pre-season token discounts). On select days you can purchase a "pay on price" for all rides.
