5 Family Activities for $5 or less in Portland

Portland, Oregon is a green, friendly city full of outdoor activities and parks! It's easy to spend a weekend here on a very reasonable budget! Here are five of our families favorite activities for $5 or less!

"Walk through the Pearl District Neighborhood"
Take the MAX or the city bus to W Burnside and SW 6th and hop off to start walking through this wonderfully restored art and boutique neighborhood of Portland!

There are many shops and art galleries to browse in, but to keep kids interested, we make sure to stop at Green Frog Toys (1031 NW 11th) and REI (1405 NW Johnson) where there are tents to play in and gear to oogle.

If you do want to break out the wallet, we like to get sandwiches or salads at Whole Foods (1210 NW Couch) and then top it off with ice cream at Ben and Jerry's (301 NW 10th).

A great website to check before leaving is http://www.explorethepearl.com/.

"Browse Powell's"
A well-known Portland landmark, Powell's City of Books is a multi-level, multi-hour affair for the whole family.

The sections are color-coded, and there's a huge amount of reading material for everyone, from babies to grandparents and everyone in-between. Check for story hours, and make sure you have time to check out the sale sections!

Get a map at the front entrance! You'll need it!

After a morning of serious book-buying, you'll be hungry: our favorite area restaurant isRocco's Pizza on 949 SW Oak. If you want to phone in an order instead (might be a good idea on a weekend), their number is: (503) 223-9835.

"Stop for dessert or coffee at Mother's"
Mother's bistro in downtown Portland is a local favorite, and it's not hard to see why. Dinner and lunch are delicious, but if you only have time for a quick bite (or have squirmy kids in tow), stop by for a fun dessert. (Try to avoid the busy time after 8 pm.) The kids will love the fun selection, and you won't be stuck in a restaurant entertaining kids for very long!

"Take a swim in Lake Oswego"
If you're visiting Portland in July or August, consider driving to the nearby suburb of Lake Oswego to swim at their swim park. With a lap section, wading section, and even water cannons, it has a fit for everyone.

It's a community swimming pool, but we didn't have any trouble visiting as out-of-town guests. It was a great way for the kids to spend some energy after leaving Portland (on our way back home to Southern Oregon), or when we're just driving through on our way further north.

You can bring swim toys such as rafts and boogie boards, too. My kids wanted their swim goggles, so we'll remember those next time!

Afterward, you may want to stop by the Hanna Andersson outlet for some great deals on children's clothing! (7 Monroe Parkway)

off I-84
Portland, Oregon

"Drive the Historic Columbia River Highway"
Take a morning or afternoon to drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway. (From Portland, take I-84 toward Troutdale and The Dalles.) Along the way, you'll see Vista House, Bridal Falls, Multnomah Falls, and more! Stop for short hikes, or just get out and enjoy the views! If you want to extend the drive, end up at Hood River and watch the windsurfers!
