Thais having a very smelly bowel movement in her diaper while listening to our guide at the Sydnedy Opera House and throwing up right after that on the beautiful Sydney Opera Floor (she was 4 months old)

On vacation or on a regular day, places to create messy art are a God send for children, especially young ones. They will be a welcome break in busy vacation week and some fresh air when a day does not start right.
And should I mention the air conditionning?

There is a perfect mix of art and play in a museum located in the same campus as the Space Needle. It is a perfect location to bring children who can be overexcited by the city and give them the tools to express their excitement, happiness, and maybe frustration. A vacation therapy!

Habitot is definitely a winner when it comes to messy art. It caters to babies and toddlers so it can be a nice break for the little one of the family after a visit of the nearby University of Berkeley. Young children will be able to hand paint and let go of their extra energy.

"My daughters spent so much time there"
My two daughters are big girls now but when they were toddlers, they spent hours playing at Habitot, going from one activity to the other and having tons of fun. They had regularly free events that were very entertaining. I avoided going there on rainy days as it was packed.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum offers two art studios: studio 5 for Pre-k and babies and Studio 10 for elementary aged children. Studio 5 is more about the process and the feeling of the tools and materials used to create art. Studio 10 is more about process and children are able to think things out a little deeper.

"Very charming kid place"
We have not been many times to the Bay Area Discovery Museum but every time we did, my children always had a great time. There have often special performances going on. The indoors exhibitions are really interesting and the indoors ones will keep your children busy for a long time while you relax, admiring the view. They are free every December 26th so that is a good moment to check them out,.

This museum has a myriad of things to do for the little traveler who wants to take a break from the SeaWorld and the zoo. They will be able to create their favorite animals out of clay among many of the activities available to them. If you have a teenager, this is place to bring him/her as there a teen studio that provides access to photography, video, and help from artists in residence.

You can visit the MOMA and then get inspired and create your own Pollock or Rousseau inspired artwork in their studios. This special program takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m.to12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m with a break during the summer (registration required). The workshops are age specific so if one of your kids can attend but not the other(s), it can be a nice opportunity for a one-on-one for a child and a parent.

"Excellent museum"
The art is unbelievable and the whole family should have a blast. Ask for the children tour map at the entrance to make sure that your kids will get a nice experience. It does not show the whole museum but it shows enough to make everybody happy. My youngest was in a crappy mood that day but when she saw the huge Pollock painting, she just became happy again, the magic of art. She could not believe that she was in front of the painting seen in the Olivia book. The Rousseau painting was fantastic: looking for animals in the jungle will keep them busy for a while. Do not miss the sculpture garden (and admire the Maillol sculpture, Maillol is from my dad's village so we were very proud!).We had a nice time and really enjoyed visiting that museum.
For info, we had bought a combined ticket Top of The Rock/MOMA and that saved us a little money (they do not have to be visited the same day).

Children and their parents can play together in the 5 areas and experiment with sculpture, drawing, and all the transformations that a piece of art can go through. On Thursday, between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, toddlers get to explore the museum with their parent or caregiver and head back to the studio to get inspire and create their own art interpretation.

Using chalks, children of all ages will be able to put their marks, ideas, drawings, poems, thoughts on to the wall, learning all the power of free speech. The wall is cleaned twice a week.

What I like about that particular art museum is that it caters to the whole range of children from toddlers to tweenagers, allowing for the whole family to create art together. They have a different free 30 minutes workshop everyday from 11:30 am to 12 pm, a perfect way to conclude a morning of fun creations.

Every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm, children, local or visitors, will have the opportunity to create Art. This activity is totally free and you do not have to visit the museum to get access to the art studio. If you are visiting Tampa during a hot summer day, this will bring a welcome creative break in your vacation schedule.
