Skagway is a very unique town that is inundated with cruise ship passengers a few times each week. It's small and sleepy on the other days with most traffic coming in from Canada to the north or a few, like us, on the AMHS ferry from Haines. You will find several choices for hotels, motels, and B&Bs, but we feel confident that the Westmark is the best place in town for a base camp! We were able to spend three days in Skagway exploring, adventuring, and just being tourists. We were appreciative of the easy, free parking after navigating the streets of Juneau and Ketchikan! The Westmark is by far the largest lodging compound in town, with 151 rooms, a dining room, a bar and a computer area along with several sitting areas inside and out for guests. Some of the rooms are in the main complex while others are just across the street where you'll also find a nice outdoor sitting area with whale fountains. We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet that was offered each morning -- for a place so far north, it was super to find ripe, flavorful fruit. There are great choices for kids and some of the best potato pancakes I've ever had. The hotel also has a guest computer area with two computers and a printer that actually works and prints free of charge! I was happy about this because if you have a device or laptop that operates on Windows 8, the internet service at the hotel is not compatible, or at least wasn't in July 2014. If you stay in the main building above the reception area, near the bar you'll likely pick up the Wi-Fi in your room. If not, there are plenty of places to sit and connect. We caught a little live entertainment in the bar area one night which was fun for our son, since rarely does an establishment have an open area that is suitable for children to have a glimpse! Complimentary cold, infused ice water is available in the lobby area. The front desk staff is extremely friendly and helpful for updates in the morning about shore excursions and tours and whether or not they are still on as scheduled. Disclosure: We received complimentary lodging during our stay from the folks at the Westmark Inn Skagway. Our opinion however is our own and is honest. Thank you!
