"great place for kids during the week"

We stayed in a caboose with our kids (ages 8, 6, 4, and 1).  During the week there were very few campers there so the older kids could bike all over the park without us worrying about traffic.  The fishing was very good.  The two older kids each caught three fish.  The swimming beach was large enough for 10 families but the water has algae.  From the parent's perspective, Super Target and Walmart are within 15 minutes for anything that you might have forgotten.  The beds are 3/4 twin so turning over can be a problem.  The cabooses are well painted on the outside but could use some minor repairs on the inside.  There is a convenience store within walking distance that also serves prepared food.  We bought bait and nothing else from the store.  The park staff promptly sprayed several hornets nests under the deck after we discovered the nests.

Description

From the park website:

The chance to sleep in an authentic retired caboose, put-and-take trout fishing and outstanding camping facilities highlight the outdoor fun at Two Rivers SRA, located southwest of Venice. The 622-acre area boasts 320 acres of water in several sandpit lakes. Besides a variety of fishing opportunities and non-powered boating, there is an unsupervised swimming beach and concession. Two Rivers also has bicycles for rent and an accessible fishing pier.

Two Rivers is a high density recreation area with 302 acres of land and 320 acres in 5 ponds adjacent to the Platte River. This area offers Modern Camping, boating, fishing and picnicking. There are camper pads with electrical hook-ups. This area features a put-and-take trout lake and 10 caboose camper cabins.

At Two Rivers State Recreation Area, 10 Union Pacific cabooses have been remodeled and restored for park lodging. The integrity of the caboose was retained in the process. The cabooses offer a unique lodging experience for park-goers. The cabooses are air-conditioned for hot summer use. They sleep six people, with two bunk beds in the rear and two mattresses in the cupola. Each is equipped with a modern bathroom, which includes a tiled shower. A stove, refrigerator, sink and a few cabinets make up the kitchen. A table, with four chairs and couch for two, serve as the dining area. For those who enjoy outdoor dining, there is a deck with picnic table and grill.

To enjoy your caboose to the fullest, please plan ahead to bring the following items: Bedding or sleeping bags (mattresses provided), towels and soap, eating utensils, charcoal and lighter fluid for grill cooking, cooking utensils, pillows. No pets are allowed in the cabooses. Reservations may be made one year in advance online 24/7, in person (during regular park office hours), by phone or mail.
