"Family Friendly Paradise in Scottsdale"

My family has stayed at a lot of hotels but few that we have stayed at even come close to the family friendliness that the Westin Kierland offers.  The resort is located on a beautiful golf course and manages to celebrate golf's Scottish roots along with Arizona history and culture.  Its an odd combination that meshes surprisingly well.

When families first arrive at the resort they should be sure to head over to the Kierland Mining Company to pick up the Kierland Pathfinder to get a list of all the fun scheduled activities going on at the resort. This also where your kids can pick up their "Compass", a fun scavenger hunt on a lanyard which allows them to go to different locations around the resort, complete an activity, and get a stamp on their passport. Once they receive their stamp, they can head back to the Kierland Mining Company to receive special pins for every stamp they have accrued. It is SO MUCH FUN!

Families with small children will appreciate that the following items are available on site for guest use: bed rails, books, booster seats, bottle warmers, diaper genie, emergency diapers and wipes, cribs, high chairs, potty seats, safety kits, step stools for bathroom sinks, umbrella and jogging stroller, and refrigerators. All these amenities mean parents have to pack less so they can enjoy themselves more.

One of the coolest things about the resort is their Adventure Pool area. The pool is massive and includes a walk in entry (which is shallow and great for kids. My kids had a blast). There is also a pop up water fountain next to the pool which is great for toddlers.  Cabanas are available for rent right next to the pool, providing a nice retreat from the desert sun.  There is a long lazy river right next to the pool and inner tubes are free (I hate when resorts charge). There is also a 110 foot water slide that is so much fun to slide down.  Kierland employees frequently show up around the pool with games for the kids to play such as water relay races. A casual food stand is located poolside for lunch, snacks, and drinks.  If you have a couple hours without the kids and are looking for peace and quiet, there is an adults only pool as well.

The Westin Kids Club at the resort is spectacular. There are nightly pajama parties (which are FREE if parents book reservations at the upscale restaurant on site, Deseo) which include dinner, games, crafts, and even tours of the inner workings of a major resort kitchen. During the day, Kids Club attendees get to swim, go on scavenger hunts, take tours, play games, and create art projects.  My kids had so much fun and brought home adorable painted pottery gifts for Mommy.

Older kids will appreciate the Digital Kids Zone- where they can take digital photos, learn how to use special effects, and take home a unique vacation memory in digital form.  The Kids in the Kitchen program gives kids aged 5-10 the opportunity to go from start to finish in a professional kitchen, making the meal and tasting their results of their efforts. During the summer they also have Teen Fear Factor where they will eat crazy foods, compete in water relay races, and winners take home prizes. There is also a resort version of "America's Got Talent" and a cardio tennis workout program to get teens active and moving.

Kids of all ages will love the OK Corral.  This outdoor play area has a life size chess board, tracks for RC Race cars, a basketball court, ping pong tables and plenty of organized activities such as hula hoop contests and water balloon games. At night, be sure to stop by to enjoy S'mores over the fire pit.

Since the resort is situated on a gorgeous golf course, its the perfect place for kids to take lessons. Golf lessons are available for children as young as seven and junior tees and club rentals are available.  There are also golf lessons for adults given by what Golf Magazine calls one of the top 100 instructors in the world.

As a non-golfer, my favorite part of the golf course is the sunset bagpiper.  He stands on the golf course as the sun goes down, playing his pipes and setting the stage for a lovely evening as guests sit on the couches by the outdoor firepit and enjoy a cocktail.

There is a full spa on site that sounds heavenly but I was unable to visit since I was traveling with the kids alone. Darn.

There are several restaurants on site and no matter which restaurant you go to, the kids menu is the same which is very nice because parents can enjoy a nice meal at one of the finer restaurants and not have to worry about what the children are going to eat.  I ate at Deseo while my kids went to the Kids Club Pajama Party (see my Deseo review in my passport) and the food was incredible.

Nellie Cashman's is another restaurant we visited with more great food. The night we visited, there was a tasting menu which had exotic meats to sample.  If you see it on the menu when you visit, I highly recommend it. Otherwise, the restaurant offers flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees with a New American flare.  This restaurant is family friendly and the typical dinner menu item is $15-20.

The Brittlebrush Bar and Grill is a great lunch spot.  It is located just adjacent to the golf course and offers food with Scottish influences. I had a rock shrimp salad that was refreshing and tasty.  If you have a big appetite, the chicken and waffles with bacon infused maple syrup sounds pretty tempting!

With all this talk about the amazing amenities, I suppose I should mention the actual hotel room!  The rooms were spacious for standard hotel rooms and the beds were extremely comfortable.  Our room had a balcony with a view of the golf course and the mountains beyond.  It was the perfect spot to have my morning coffee. The hotel does offer suites for larger families or parents who want a place to retreat after the kids go to sleep.   As nice as the rooms are, you probably won't want to spend much time in them when there is so much to do at this resort!

Bottom line: This resort is incredibly family and highly recommended. I travel with my children frequently and rarely see a resort that comes close to achieving this level of family friendliness. Two thumbs way up, four stars, A+++.

Disclosure: My family did receive a complimentary stay at the Westin Kierland Resort which included meals in order to complete this review. The hotel did not ask that I express any particular opinion and, as always, all of my reviews are my honest opinion,

"top notch!"

We loved staying here. There is plenty to do in the warm weather, loved the pool!!! For a relaxing vacation, this is a prime location. Kierland Commons is amazing, all the shops you could dream of! I liked to go over during nap time while my husband stayed back in the room or took our kid to the pool. You Must check them out! The staff at the hotel was super friendly and everything felt very clean. Enjoy!!

"Great pools and nice rooms"

This resort is beautiful.  The pools are one of the most fun parts of the experience, with a lazy river, water slide, and children's play pool.  They also have a kids club for older children.  The location is great, within walking distance of the Kierland Commons shopping center that has great upscale shopping and several dining options.
