This is not a retreat that would typically be associated with children. There were none of the typical, child-friendly, amenities. However, it was beautiful, worth the trip, and our son did enjoy himself.
There are huge differences between the rooms. We were in a typical two-double bed room. There was absolutely nothing fancy or special about the room. HOWEVER, there is no way to beat having a private mineral-spa under the oak trees on the deck of the room.
We did have friends stay in the brand-new suites across the creek. Now those rooms are a treat! They are over-looking the creek and the groves of trees.
There is one drawback-parking! Parking is very hard to come by. The majority of the rooms are either up on a steep hill with limited parking, or across the creek, with no parking nearby. So, be prepared to park your car and walk in.
The grounds are beautiful! Our family had a great time at the pool. We also took advantage of the yoga class. We were able to explore the grounds, saw wild turkeys, and enjoy the resort's proximity to the Bob Jones trail to take a hike down to Avila Beach. While we did not eat at the restaurant on grounds, some in our party did, and were less than impressed.
We felt that we used the resort as a home base to take our son to see the more kid-friendly places in the area. But, it was so nice to come back to the hotel after putting him down for his nap or the night, and jump into the mineral spa. :)
Sycamore Mineral Springs also offers mineral spas by the hour. So, if this isn't a place that you'd like to stay the night, know that you can stil take advantage of the resort's offerings ala carte.
It is a beautiful place for a relaxing adult weekend or special celebration.
Now, I'm not too sure that I'd recommend Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort for families, but for a relaxing, romantic few nights away with your husband, it's heavenly. We had a room with a private hot tub, which was so much fun to relax in the natural hot springs while gazing up at the stars. The restaurant was pretty good (if you like fru-fru food) but the walking trails and atmosphere are amazing. Very romantic. :)
We visited the mineral springs for our 10th anniversary in 2006. It was our first getaway since we had kids so we splurged on a one room suite with a fresh water hot tub. The sulfur hot springs have an unpleasant odor and so we chose the fresh water hot tubs. The service was fabulous and the room was perfect. We did not choose to eat at the restaurant on grounds, but in retrospect we should have.
