I have stayed at this property and have found it a good value for the money, considering the number of bedrooms and the beachfront location. If you want to spend a lot of time at the beach and need more than one bedroom, you'll be hard pressed to find a better value for this location. It's true, the property dates from the 60's (I think) and each condo is privately owned, so depending on the upkeep it's had, the quality of the rental will vary. But I would say it's no different from rental condos in Hawaii or the like. It's atop a bluff with about 100 steps down to the beach which some people find an issue. We stayed there with a 3 year old and had no problem with the steps - he just needed some help getting up them on the way home. The beach is nice, though it gets small at high tide. Del Mar beaches are much more attractive because there is no bluff, more sand and can be reached via car in 5 min. When we stayed there we spent time at both beaches. There is a California Pizza Kitchen, a drug store and other little eateries within a short walk or short drive as well. If you want to spend a lot of time at the beach, stay in Solana Beach or Del Mar (avoid La Jolla, it's overpriced and the beaches are no better). A lot of the condos are occupied by year round residents and you're in the middle of a residential neighborhood where surfing, jogging and biking are a way of life. If you want to do more sightseeing, you could be better off staying closer to downtown - there is a holiday inn near Sea World that has family suites if I recall and the zoo will be close by. However you won't get much interaction with the locals so it just depends on what you value. Lego Land is 20 min from Solana Beach and about 40 min from downtown. When planning your day trips, be sure to avoid rush hour as I-5 does clog up southbound in the morning and northbound after 3-4pm.
