This is a great place for a family vacation. The resort isn't that close to a town and once you get to the park entrance, you still have a few miles to go before you reach the lodge. It gives the feeling of being remote and in the wilderness with all the amenities of a nice hotel. The rooms are well equipped for families, you could easily sleep 6 or more as some rooms come with double beds AND bunk beds. The hotel has places to eat, but they only serve meals during certain hours so if you miss out you're making a serious trek to eat somewhere else. There is a nice playground and a huge pool. There are tons of things to do while on the resort- golf, boating, hiking. Our family had a blast.
My family has visited Salt Fork four times in the last four years. It is a great destination for a family get-away. I struggled with the decision to list it under hotel instead of activities, because there are so many activities to enjoy.
The only problem with Salt Fork is that once you are at the Resort you are easily 20-30 miles from any restaurants or even convenience stores. Make sure you bring food with you! The lodge rooms now have a mini fridge for your use!
