This is a charming hostel in a weather beaten beach shack kind of way. We stayed in the Seal House, a 3 bedroom group house with a shared kitchen. The kitchen was pretty modern and clean, with a new gas stove, microwave, toaster and large sink.
The good:
You couldn't find a more gorgeous location. Perched on top of towering cliffs, each house faces the crashing surf. The picnic tables outside are ideal spots to watch the sunsets.
The tiny beach area is my favorite on San Mateo County coastline. It is shltered and warm, with calm water- great for little kids.
Bunk beds are pretty clean and fun for kids.
The Bad:
Bathrooms are pretty gross- our shower was stopped up. ick.
Lights out is 11pm- they are very strict about this, even in the group houses.
There is no-alcohol policy.
The Ugly:
The manager was cranky and treated us like we were a group of drunken unwashed 18 year old backpackers who wouldn't rest until we'd destroyed the place.
Four family houses, each with a fully equipped kitchen, clustered around one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States. An incredible location on a dazzling stretch of coastline, near state parks, tidepools, beaches, redwood forests, and the famous Año Nuevo State Reserve, where hundreds of elephant seals are a sight to behold.
