If you are looking for a centrally located hotel on Avalon with recently remodeled (as in 2010!) rooms, friendly staff, and a tropical atmosphere, look no further than the Pavilion Hotel. The hotel is literally 14 steps from the beach and is located on the main drag in Catalina. Little touches from the tropically landscaped central courtyard to the outdoor seating area with incredible ocean views make this small hotel feel more like secret tropical retreat. The hotel is family friendly and caters to them with special package deals.
Most of the ground level rooms have semi-private lanais, so try to snag one of those if you can. We stayed in a standard room on the second floor and found it to be the size of a standard motel room (I think this hotel was a motel in a former life but the management has done a wonderful job transforming the space they have) which was a little tight for our family of four. We typically try to stay in suite sized rooms and have become a bit spoiled in that regard. That being said, the room was very nicely furnished and they used the space that was available quite well.
There was a fridge and coffee service in our room which came in handy, as always, and the hotel staff was more than happy to bring us portable cribs for the kids to sleep in. They were more than willing to store our bags when we checked out and were wanting to explore the island more before catching our ferry back to the mainland.
We enjoyed having a complimentary continental breakfast waiting for us every morning. Eating the first meal of the day with the ocean as our back drop put even put a smile on my face, and I am notoriously NOT a morning person. We also tried to make it back every evening by 5PM so we could enjoy the complimentary wine and cheese hour (lemonade was available for the kids). Not only was it a wonderful time to relax and enjoy the scenery, but it was also fun to chat with other hotel guests. The island is so small that you are bound to run into a familiar face on the mini golf course or during a tour of some sort.
Finally, I can’t write a review of this hotel without saying how much l loved the firepit. Yes, the concept of the firepit is simple enough but this one was special because it featured every one of the Channel Islands in its design and for a geography nerd like myself, it was perfection. One night, my husband sat by the fire and made use of the complimentary (as it should be!) internet on site as he worked on his laptop.
Bottom Line: I would definitely stay here again. Next time I would opt for a larger room just so we could have a bit more space but other than that, everything was amazing. Keep on the look out for great package deals. When we stayed at the Pavilion the hotel was offering and unlimited activities package that was a huge bargain.
Disclosure: My family and I received a complimentary stay at the Pavilion Hotel as part of a press tour of Avalon hosted by the Santa Catalina Island Company. It was never suggested that any particular opinion be expressed and all the opinions above are entirely my own.
