This is an awesome place to stay. To update previous reviews - the resort has a restaurant and a spa / hairdresser on site once again, seems to have resolved many of the housecleaning issues as our beds were made, rooms picked up and restocked everyday, and the staff was incredibly friendly.
What we liked most about staying here
- The pool is completely fenced so the kids could play on the grass areas and sidewalks around the room and I didn't have to worry about them getting into the pool.
- Every bedroom and the family room have large glass sliding doors, I loved opening these up and hearing the waterfalls at the pools, the birds, and on occasion, the toads that move in after it rains.
- Full kitchen with very high end appliances
- Washing machine and dryer in the room (believe this is only in the 2 bedroom models)
- Bathtub the size of a hot tub (sorry, no bubbles)
- Fish pond and occasional fish feeding for the kids
- Fantastic pool
- Walking distance to Safeway, Longs Drugs, Foodland, McDonalds, and several local restaurants
- Pool/beach towels are checked out for the duration of the stay
- Housekeeping left "reusables" in the room, we had a small book collection, pool noodles, dishwashing detergent
- Air conditioning was tied to the sliding doors so if the doors were open the air conditioning automatically turned off
- We were missing the DVD player when we first arrived, but a phone call to the front desk and a person was in the room 10 minutes later installing one.
- The activities desk had maps and ideas for every request, they provided excellent maps to hiking trails in the area and didn't try to push "pay" activities when I was asking about free activities.
- The security guards were awesome, they just laughed when we were trying to catch toads and mommy almost fell in the fishpond and thought toasting marshmallows in the tiki torches was a really fun idea (we didn't actually eat these - I toasted some on the stove for eating, but what the kids don't know...)
My only complaints (notice none of these have anything to do with the kiddos):
- Some rooms have HE washing machines and some don't, so we packed non HE detergent and ended up needing HE...the rooms do not come with any laundry detergent but rather a note reminding you to buy HE detergent.
- The kitchen was not well stocked with things that could be taken to the grill for poolside dining, we had plastic cups but other than that there wasn't a single plastic dish in the kitchen, everything was glass.
- The bar restaurant does not have a kitchen so they take over one of the two sets of guest grills every night to prepare meat for the restaurant. On weeknights this wasn't an issue, but on Friday and Saturday night we had to wait for grills to free up to cook dinner.
We stayed at the Outrigger in December 2009 and it was great!
This was positive:
- awesome pool with a sandy kid s pool which is nice because the little ones do not slip all the time, nice water temperature
- directly at the beach
- in the middle of Kapaa
- nice facilities
- huge two bedroom appartment, very quiet, modern kitchenette with all appliances, 2 bathrooms (one of them was very nice)
- washing machine and dishwasher in the appartment
- close to Safeway
- The apparmtent was very clean when we moved in.
This was not so good:
- we had booked garden view and got an appartment overlooking the hotel s parking lot. By the way, mountain view does mean overlooking the Safeway parking lot and ocean view is 50 bucks extra per day.
- There were no restaurant or spa services on site by the time we were there, because the investor had gone bankrupt (check if that is available before you book)
- The gym had no outdoor windows.
- The beach is definitely nicer in Poipu.
- There were no highchairs available.
- Cribs cost 10 dollars extra per day.
- Housekeeping was lax during our stay. They were instructed to only make the beds, not to clean up.
I would love to go there again, the location is central on the island, the appartment and the pool were great.
We stayed in unit A102 (2 bed-3 bath) from 6 Sept-13 Sept. We found our stay to be really pleasant. It was a really convienent place to stay with 2 grocery stores across the street (a Safeway, and a Foodmart, we prefered to shop in the Foodmart). There are also several restaurants in the area too (Coconuts was great in our opinions).
The rooms were really beautiful. We reserved an OceanFront (booked through Costco), which was fantastic. It was right near the bar where they have live music most nights, but it didn't really disturb us (I could barely hear it and it never woke up our baby who is an incredibly light sleeper).
I had a massage at the spa and really enjoyed that too. It was great.
The one problem I did find was the views and room were too nice...you didn't want to leave! The pool was fantasic also and we enjoyed the 'soft water' (aka saline pool...so much nicer than chlorine!). They have a great sand bottom area of the pool for little ones and the sand is a big grain so it doesn't get in eyes and washes off easily. The slides were lots of fun too.
In all honesty if I had to say a couple of things that could use improvement, they would be:
- Not charging $10/night for highchairs and cribs to be rented. You already pay a premium to stay here (we got lucky...someone had bought a booster seat and left it in the condo).
- The housekeeping could be a little random too. Some days we ended up with loads of extra towels, and other days none. One bed would be fully made, and the other not.
- Talk to the city about the traffic light to turn onto the highway. We sat there for a good 5-7 minutes one day, just trying to turn left out of the complex.
All in all, we would definitely go back and stay here again.
