Summer vacation is here and I was itching to get away for the weekend. On Friday I searched the KOA website for a campground close enough to me and narrowed it down to two places. We decided on the KOA in Medina, NY, about 50 minutes from our home. We missed the online reservation deadline (4pm), so my husband called up and reserved us a tent site with water and electricity. He was asked where we wanted to stay in the camptround, but never having been there before we didn't know. Trees and playground are what was decided on.
A couple hours later we were packed up and on our way. At check-in we were given a map with a line drawn from the camp store to our site. I was a little disappointed about where we were placed. The campground is large, and the majority of it are trailers, campers, pop-ups, and semi-permenant to permanant "housing." I felt like we were infringing on their space. Plus we were right next to the playground (where a group of teenage girls decided to come after hours our first night there and lay some choice words out, loud enough for my children to hear), and we had one small tree which gave very little shade.
I honestly thought I would never go back, but the next day changed that. Since there were open sites in our area (with lots of shade!) we were allowed to move to a site of our choosing without any problems. We swam in the pool a couple of times (3 feet on each end, 4 feet in the middle), the kids played on the playgrounds and jumped on the jumping pillow. There were activities planned throughout the day, and we took part in the kids craft (coloring a puppet), and the kids campfire cooking (caramels over a campfire sandwiched between two Ritz crackers).
Some activities we didn't participate in were kickball, free firetruck rides, and family casino night. We also didn't participate in the pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. We ended up driving home at 4:30 in the morning because my daughter got sick and we really had no other choice but to go (my husband drove back later to take down the tent and check out).
There's a camp store, a game room, an activity center, catch and release lake, and bikes and boats for rent. Because the campground is so large a lot of people rent golf carts to get around. Unfortunately they only have 5 to rent out, and if you really want one you need to try to reserve it a few days ahead of time. You could always rent from a local place, but we didn't check that out.
It's not my favorite KOA, but it is nice, the people are great, and my kids enjoyed themselves. It was perfect for a relaxing weekend a short way from home.
