We recently stayed at Ledge Rock at Whiteface while checking out the Adirondack area and skiing at Whiteface.
The hotel is a motel style building that it VERY conveniently located about 2 minutes from the entrance to Whiteface on a somewhat busy road. I joked with the owner David Baker that it took me longer to ride the ski lift to the top of the trail than it took me to get to the entrance of the ski area. They really are very close.
The location of the hotel was perfect for us because we were going skiing, however it was a bit of a desolate 10 minute drive into Lake Placid if you were looking for some more to do. There were a few good restaurants around the hotel and that was fine for us, however if you were looking for something a bit more active you need to drive.
Check in was a friendly affair. The owners run the place and live on site next door to the front desk. The lobby area was rustically decorated and to the delight of my 3 kids adoringly watched over by 2 Collies named Marley and Quinn and 2 cats named Snuggles and Guinness. They were fast friends.
To get to our room we drove around back where it was quieter. All of the rooms face the mountain and ours was on the second floor as the hotel is built into the ledge. This afforded us great views of the Whiteface skiing area and a balcony if we could bear the cold.
The room had 2 double beds, a bath with a tub, a table with 2 chairs, a TV and desk area and microwave and refrigerator. This came in handy for a some great early morning breakfasts and being able to pack a lunch for our day of skiing. Upon check-in the owners quickly noticed that we might need an additional bed as we have 3 kids and directly delivered a roll away to our room.
The Adirondack room is the great room and gathering area for the motel. It is located at one end of the building and has a grand fireplace, some tables and chairs, a pool table and some cozy spots to watch TV and movies from their collection. There are also books and brochures of activities and attractions in the area. After our long day of skiing we were able to cozy up in our jammies and hats with the roaring fire and watch Disney's Fantasia until our eyes were heavy with sleep. The exercise may have been the sleep inducing ingredient, but it also may have been the treats the owners brings up to the Adirondack room nightly. We DID have a belly full of brownies. This along with playing in the snow with the friendly animals was the highlight of our stay for the kids.
From the balcony I took pictures of them frolicking in the snow with Quinn and using the provided sleds to take a few runs down the hill in front. There are also some swings and a pool to use when the weather is more appropriate. Although it was -3F when we awoke on Sunday morning and the kids really wanted to go back and play in the snow with the dogs. Maybe they would have gone swimming??!!
