"Kid-friendly and beach front with divine food"
I live in La Jolla and there are some really beautiful hotels here. Fortunately, they are all unique in their own ways and appropriate for all sorts of travelers. The La Jolla Shores Hotel does not have the fanciest decor or amenities, but it's probably the hotel that your kids will love the most (hence the 5 star review on Trekaroo). Do splurge for a larger room that has the ocean view if you can. The waves will lull you to sleep.
Back to the beach: La Jolla Shores beach is our favorite in the area. It's nice and sandy with even keeled waves. The beach is divided so that swimmers won't collide with surfers as it's also a great place to surf. You could easily spend the entire day here. The hotel has chairs and towels for your use (not sure about umbrellas, would have to ask). Near the beach is Kellogg park with a very nice playground and huge grassy area. It's really a kids paradise. Bring sand toys. Surf Diva and others are nearby for kayak and surfing lessons.
There is a small pool, but we didn't use it. The interior decor is a little bit tired and we were near the restaurant and could hear music from a wedding until about 10pm, that luckily didn't bother my daughter.
The other upside is that the room service and hotel restaurant is the Shores Restaurant, one of my new favorites in the area. They have a great kids menu (kids under 8 eat free if staying at the hotel, 2 kid maximum) and adults will love the view, huge wine list, and food. The continental breakfast buffet is also very reasonably priced and great for kidsor a quick bite to eat. We could see the sand castle we built on the beach from our table in the restaurant. My daughter thought this was beyond cool.

voice mail and free local calls. Televisions have DVD players. Air
conditioned rooms also include separate sitting areas, desks,
blackout drapes/curtains, and electronic/magnetic keys.
Housekeeping is offered and guests may request wake up calls. Cribs
(infant beds) and rollaway beds are available on request.
