"Pool fun for every age"

Splashing around the 4-acres of pools at JW Marriott Desert Ridge was a great way to spend a summer afternoon. All the kids (ages 1 to 12) and I loved all the swimming, lounging, floating, and sliding we could do in 5 pools, a waterslide, and a splash pad. We didn’t stay at this resort but were able to enjoy the pools there.

There are 4 pools and 2 hot tubs spread across 4 acres of land. The pool area is beautifully landscaped and secluded. All you can see is the resort, the pools, and a tropical garden. There are patio and grassy areas covered in lounge chairs and tables. I loved that there were the lawn areas so my one-year-old could crawl around and I could lie on the nice cool grass beside her. Upon first entering, it seemed like all the tables and chairs were taken, but after walking in a little more, we saw there was plenty of available seating around the pools. Everyone must try to grab the first chair they see. There are multiple water stations around that employees keep stocked with pitchers of ice water and cups for families to bring to their seats. There is also a cooler and cups if you are just looking for a quick drink. Servers stroll the pavement between the pools so it’s easy to flag someone down if you want to order food or drinks from the poolside café, Just A Splash. We didn’t notice servers around the lazy river so if you choose to lounge there, you may have to walk up to the café to order. There is a place to grab towels at the entrance but there are also a few other places around the pools you can get a new one. There are also multiple towel returns. It was very convenient not to have to bring our towels all the way back to the front when we were done with them.

The lazy river is the first pool you come to if you follow the main path after entering the pool gates. Single and double tubes are floating around the pool or stacked beside it waiting for you to grab one and jump in. I loved that there were double tube options so I didn’t have to try to hold onto my little one’s tubes as we floated around. The river is set slightly below the other pools so it feels extra secluded and relaxing. You float under a couple bridges and a few sprayers. The kids liked swimming in the current. There are plenty of exit and entrance areas along the river so you can hop in or out at any point. The river is a meandering 1,600 feet long and fairly wide, so it never felt too crowded, except maybe by the waterslide.

The 89-foot waterslide is located on the far side of the lazy river.  It is accessible either from the river itself or by walking across a small walkway. The slide is fairly mild according to my 12 & 9-year-olds, though they did ride it multiple times. The average age of sliders was probably around 8-years-old. I only saw a couple adults go down. My 6 & 5-year-old boys are pretty cautious and they loved this slide. The slide ends in a small pool area that is connected to the lazy river. There were lots of parents hanging out in the water here waiting for their children to slide and to catch them at the bottom. There is an attendant at the top of the slide but not the bottom. You do have to be at least 42” to ride this slide.

There are 3 pools in the main area besides the lazy river: The Wildfire Pool, The Sidewinder Pool, and the Mesa Pool. The sidewinder pool looks like a short river but doesn’t have underwater jets. While we were here, this pool seemed to be the main adult hangout. There were people in the water with their drinks just standing around talking. I didn’t see any kids splashing around here so we didn’t start that up. The main pool, Wildfire, is beautiful. It is quite large with plenty of room to swim around or sit and relax. There is a waterfall feature right in the center accessible by a walkway across the water. This pool seemed to be the hangout for kids about 8 and up, as well as teens and adults. People were throwing around balls and playing water games. My older kids liked this pool best. The Mesa Pool was best for the little kids. The average depth of this pool is 3.5 feet, so there is lots of room for short legs to reach the bottom. It is located the farthest from the entrance gates and was the least crowded of the pools so it was easy to keep an eye on the kids as they swam around. It is also located right next to the kids splash pad. The splash pad is very simple. Jets of water arch from the ground towards the center of the fountain area. Mostly toddlers were playing here, but we did see some older kids enjoying it as well.

The pools at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge are wonderful. There are plenty of options whether you want to play or relax. Summertime rates are great with deals like the Fling & Swing package offered this year (2015). Based on the pools and rates, I would recommend this resort to any family who likes to play in a really cool pool.

Disclosure: My family and I were given pool passes to JW Marriott Desert Ridge for the purpose of review but the opinions expressed here are completely my own.

"Great Hotel For Families"

Our family recently took a trip to Phoenix and stayed at the Desert Ridge Resort. This resort was one of the most beautiful Marriott's we have ever stayed at, and was full of great surprises. My son loved the lazy river, my husband loved the great restaurants on site (Roy's)and golfing, and I was very impressed by the Nickelodeon Activity Zone--a fun offering that allowed my son to eat dinner with a great counselor and some other guests at the resort, while we enjoyed a night out.

With four different pool options every level of swimmer was happy!! For us the biggest highlight was probably the Lazy River and Waterslide. The hotel had inner tubes and sunscreen so it very easy to enjoy!
