The grounds at this particular Hyatt are really beautiful. After going to a gorgeous wedding here a few years back, we decided to stay one night for a fun, quick and close to home stay-cation.
The hotel is mostly full (especially on a Friday night, apparently) of adults, business folks, and young couples. In fact, while staying at this property, I did not see one other child on the premises-- really!!
If you have older kids, they might enjoy a few perks. There are some great pools, a fun picture book area (think coffee table books) on a variety of topics that is sure to give your kids something to browse through, and there are TVs all over the lobby, mostly displaying news and sports games, but you can ask for them to be changed to anything you would like.
The staff was friendly and helpful, as well.
The parking lot is not directly next to the hotel. If you have small ones without a stroller or with a ton of luggage, be sure to take advantage of the valet parking, which is $8 more than the self-park ($19!!).
The beds are really comfy, with luxurious linens that you might not want to hop out of so quickly in the morning-- but a great looking buffet (or some pretty reasonable room service prices) might lure you out anyway.
We walked to Balboa Island, which is a straight shot past a few lights. It took us about 20 minutes, which included all the stops at traffic lights. It does have a bit of a hill, so your little ones might complain unless they are in a stroller. The scenery is beautiful, though, and we enjoyed our very pleasant walk. The Balboa Island Ferry, which takes you (for $1) to the other side of the bay and to the beach access is about a 8 minute walk from the little shopping district of Balboa Island.
I personally think that all Hyatt hotels are expensive, but this Hyatt in particular was a bit too much. I decided to book my stay regardless of the price. The rooms are small, and there is not much to do within close distance. This is definitely a hotel for business people. There was also a convention going on downstairs, it was crowded. The restaurants are great though, the food is really good!
Service was great. The staff was friendly. The breakfast/brunch buffet at the restaurant was worth it. But it was still not a kid-friendly place. Unless you pay for valet parking ($27), you'd have to walk a good distance to park your car and when you're going to the beach and doing stuff in the area, it's kind of a pain to lug your kid and all your stuff all that way. Second, the walls are mighty thin and at night it can be very loud. We were placed in the older part of the hotel, closer to the lobby, so maybe we didn't get the best room. The pools were fine, not the warmest, nor always well located. At the one pool we hung out at, there was no food or drink service. I don't know if the others had. I couldn't find all the pools easily. Also, while the concierge says it's a quick walk to Balboa Island, it's not really. With a young kid, you'll have to drive or stroll. Parking on Balboa is hard to find on the weekends, too.
