I wanted to try something new so I thought the Hotel Beacon would be a good choice. Little did I know how amazing it would be! The location was fantastic and the concierge was beyond friendly. The rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated also. I just wish that I would have known to go here for longer!
We stayed here in early-September and had a fantastic time. The upgraded room at check-in set us in the right mood, and we were quite pleased with the way the hotel had been renovated. Most importantly, the hotel is in a great location, within walking distance to many of New York's best attractions for kids. Having a kitchen in the room was also great for eating take-out when the kids aren't in the mood to sit at a restaurant.
We recently stayed for a night at the Hotel Beacon in the Upper West Side. Would have stayed two except that it was totally booked the second night. I chose this hotel because of it's fabulous location, available suites and check out the success of its recent renovations.
- Location, location, location
NYC is a big place and there's a lot of walking and transit required for family travelers. I wanted to stay in the Upper West Side because of the large number of things for families with toddlers to do. American Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum of Manhattan, Central Park, and various subway lines. The Hotel Beacon is dab-smack in the middle of it all and within easy walking distance. Having Central Park so close was also a bonus with the zoo, playgrounds and street performers. We had a one-bedroom suite with a fully equipped kitchen, so having Citarella and Fairway supermarkets right across the street made it easy to get milk and food for meals. H&H is just down the street for fresh bagels in the morning and there are tons of amazing restaurants just outside the hotel.
Rooms
We booked a one-bedroom suite for $250 and upon arrival, got upgraded to a two-bedroom suite which was a huge bonus. All the suites come with fully equipped kitchens and full-size fridges. The two bedroom suite even had two bathrooms. A crib was provided as requested and it was nice to have the bathrooms separated from the bedrooms, so you didn't have to worry about waking your baby when going to the bedroom. For NYC, the room was quite large. Kitchenettes are also available in the double/double and king rooms. All the suites have pull-out sofas in the living room for larger families.
Hotel Service and Amenities
The hotel didn't have a pool or kid programs, but there's enough in NYC to entertain a child of any age. There's also plenty of nearby shops for families to pick up anything that you might need for a child. All the staff was cordial and the doorman was great at always getting the door for the stroller which was nice especially after a long morning playing.
Value
The hotel is a stinking steal for NYC. For the price, I had low expectations, but was blown away. Considering a standard room in Times Square is $199-250, how could you not book here and get a one-bedroom suite with a kitchen! My father in-law who was staying at another hotel in midtown, came to visit and decided to dump his midtown standard room and check into the Hotel Beacon less than an hour later. These rates probably won't last forever since the hotel can definitely charge more for what they're providing, but until then, we'll be back.
