"Nice hotel for Waikiki"

First off let me say I have stayed in Waikiki many times. Hilton Hawaiian Village two times (one of which was the Grand Waikikian portion).

Hilton Hawaiian Village (HHV) vs Marriott Ko-olina Beach Club (KBC) reviews

I had always wondered the pros and cons of staying at the HHV vs the KBC.  I decided to take my 3 year old to both in Feb.  We stayed 4 nights at the HHV and 4 nights at the KBC in Ko’olina.  We had stayed at the HHV before in Dec so we knew the grounds very well. In Dec we had stayed at the Grand Waikikian part of the HHV which is the condo portion (very nice!). This time we stayed in the hotel portion.

I had loved the HHV pools (mostly paradise pool) from our previous visits, however the pool was colder this time and definitely more people than our previous visits.  It was extremely crowded and busy and we never felt like we got to relax.

They originally put me in a family room which was in the tower (Kalia?) they were doing balcony renovations on. My 3 year old still naps so that was not an option and I was transferred to the Diamond Head tower.  The room in the other tower was nicer. The room in the Diamond head tower was nothing special. Especially after staying at the Grand Waikikian with its full kitchen, large baths, etc.  The Diamond head tower room had old blue carpet, a basic bed, and a mini refrig.

After a few days we went to Marriott KBC about 20-30 miles from Waikiki. Checked in and was given a room on the 6th floor with an ocean view. 6th floor seems to be the beginning of the oceanview and you are pretty level with palm trees. Still great views.  This resort is nothing short of amazing!  The pools, the grounds, the staff, the beach.  This is the resort to go to if you have children.  I did see lots of older folks as well.  Since it was just me and my 3 year old I got the studio room. It was perfect for us and the larger mini refrig and microwave were a plus.  The KBC has an activities calendar for the week when you arrive. Lots of stuff to do (coconut painting, koi fish feedings, exercise classes, etc).  Be sure to check out all the pools on site as you will discover that they are amazing (waterfall pool, slide, zero entry sand pool, etc)

Room (Diamond head) at the HHV
-small hotel room. Outdated
-mini refrig
-no microwave
-Lanai (balcony) was old metal rails. I am always cautious of balconies with a toddler but this one made me very nervous.
- Staff was not friendly

Resort highlights of the HHV
-Paradise pool with slide but cold
-Fireworks on Friday night
-Penguin feeding and other wildlife
-Lagoon sand is hard
-$30 parking however we are military so parked at the Hale Koa next door for $8 a night 

Room at the Marriott KBC
-Very nice updated decor with a wonderful view of ocean. Note: if you are allergic to feathers everything in the room has feather pillows and down comforters
- Larger than average mini-refrig (with freezer)
-microwave
-Sink and silverware, plates, etc.
-Balcony was nice. The balcony did not have rails but rather glass or something so your view was not interrupted. Much safer than rails.
-Super friendly staff

Resort highlights at the Marriott KBC
-Wonderful and I mean WONDERFUL pools. Kiddie pool that goes from a sandy bottom to normal. Includes small fountains. Another pool has a waterfall tunnel and slide.
-Jacuzzis all over including one designed for kids at a lower temperature
-Activity calendar every day. Arts and crafts for kids (like coconut painting, etc)
-BBQs on ground (with utensils)
-$30 mandatory parking fee each day (yuck!)
-Wonderful lagoon in front of the resort with nice soft sand.
-Nice walking path to the other hotels and lagoons in the area
-Free use of washer and dryer on every other floor

If you have never been to Oahu before then I suggest at least a little stay in Waikiki for the entertainment, shopping, etc. If you want relaxation, good quality family time then the Marriott KBC is a MUST. It will not be our last time there. If I were to stay at the HHV again I would stay at the Grand Waikikian. More family friendly and more space.

We have been to Hawaii 8+ times and taken our toddler since he was born.  We don’t have family there. We just feel like Hawaii is “home”, for some reason.  I was on my own this trip as my husband is deployed. My 3 year old and I are on adventures while daddy is gone.

"Beautiful resort!"

We stayed at this place a few years ago with my husbands family. It is a beautiful place with so much land.  We had a great time the people were all friendly and helpful.  It was also very close to all of the main attractions in Waikiki.  We love the fact that the hotel had many restaurants located nearby along side the ocean.

"Great Resort"

The Hilton Hawaiian Village was fabulous! There are several pools, plus a large lagoon, not to mention you are right on the beach. There are lots of animals at the resort, including penguins! Every morning after our breakfast buffet of fresh fruits and pastries we would go visit the penguins. There are fireworks and hula shows every week, and lots of activities. Check with the front desk to find out what activities will be offered while you are visiting.

There are not a lot of great/affordable dining options at the resort, but there are tons of options within a short walking distance. There is an ABC Store at the resort which has pretty much anything you might need, plus lots of very affordable souvenirs.

The hotel is located on the end of Waikiki. From here you can walk down the beach towards the other hotels, or you can rent a car and tour the island.  There are a lot of activities to do on Oahu that are very family friendly.

"crowded in the pools!"

Too crowded and the ocean had rocks in it- we rented a car and went to public beaches that were clearer like Kialua and it had shade.  My kids, both boys, aged 14 and 16 liked snorkeling at Hanuma Bay too.  The hotel was convenient to many things which was a plus but really felt that seeing the island by car was the best part...we went to the north shore and ate at Giovanni's shrimp truck- the garlic shrimp were great!  You have to peel them but the aroma of garlic will entice you and you won't care...Mmm.  Back to the hotel....it is a huge series of towers...we were upgraded to an ocean view room in the rainbow tower- great view,  Diamond Head was in the distance.  There was a refrigerator and a wet bar which is useful. The next day went to the Kalia Tower which was farther in from the ocean but we had a time share unit with an ocean view and it  had 2 terraces.  Laundry was on the floor and not in the unit but the view was worth that inconvenience for us.

"Timeshare Rental"

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village by renting a timeshare there through http://www.redweek.com.  We have four kids ranging in age from 2 to 14 and  were thrilled with it.  The fact that it's right on the beach allowed our 12 and 14 year olds to go to the beach when they wanted.  Meanwhile it was great to have the kiddie pool and the playground for our two youngest.  And being a timeshare unit we had space that allowed all of us to relax.  This was a great experience for all of us.

And, we just booked it again with a HUGE family trip this July to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Can't wait to go back.

"Our kids had a great time"

I wasn't quite sure what to make for my first impression of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  We pulled up to the check in area to drop off our bags and the porter who helped us with our bags was very friendly... almost too friendly, as in he wouldn't stop spouting about all the great things the Hilton had for our kids.  He mentioned the kid's pool and the fireworks and the penguins and ... It was great hearing about all these things, but I was also trying to keep both my boys from going in different directions while also helping my father-in-law unpack the car quickly because he needed to leave to go to a dinner.  In the end, I just wanted him to stop talking so I could get checked in without losing my mind.

The first night there was a free hula show in the main part of the hotel.  It was fun at first for the boys (3 yrs. and 18 mos.), but the show ended up being about 45 min.  For their little attention spans it was a bit too long.  They really enjoyed the fire dancers and fireworks at the end of the show.  This all happens every friday, so we were lucky to check in right before the show started.

The hotel is right on the beach, so you have the option of either going to the beach or using one of their pools.  We decided to use the kiddy pool, which at its deepest is only 5 feet down.  There are water slides, tunnels, waterfalls, and even sauna's there.  Unfortunately, only people 5 yrs. and older can use the slides and saunas.  That didn't stop our boys though.  The steps into the pool are wide, so little people have a place to play.  Our 3 yr. old was really nervous about the pool being too deep.  After he realized the he could play on the steps, he was a happy little camper wading in the water.  The wider steps also helped me out quite a bit because our 18 mos. old wanted to "swim," so I held him on his stomach to "paddle" with his arms.  I was able to freely walk around the steps and the water was at just about the right height where I didn't have to lean over or lift him up so that he was just above the top of the water.

Our eldest son loved the penguins the most.  We saw them 3 times and he was still begging to see them as we were leaving the hotel.  Our 18 mos. old never got to the penguins because on the way to the penguins are flamingos.  We had to drag him away from watching them (even though they don't really do anything) to go swimming.

We stayed for 3 days/2 nights and had a great time.  There was an abundance of things to do with our kids and the grounds are beautiful.  Flowers, trees, gardens, fish, waterfalls, and more basically every where you turn.  The room was well kept, the hotel staff was very friendly, and the sheets... man... so soft and comfortable you almost didn't care to check out the rest of the hotel.

I would have given the hotel 5 stars, but I wish the porter had been a little more astute and noticed he didn't have my full attention as I was running after my kids.  Also, although the pool was really great and our kids loved it, the water was really cold.  They wanted to stay and swim longer, but I wasn't too happy about how much their lips were turning purple and their arms were shacking.  I think the pool is located to always be in the shade of the hotel which is a good thing to keep our kids out of the sun, but I'm not sure if the water ever really warms up.  I suppose that's why the saunas are there.

"A village of fun"

When we went, we didn't have kids with us, so I don't know first hand about the kids club another activities specifically for kids. It was a beautiful resort, though. It has lots of plants and water features. It has penguins that live right there, birds that the handlers will let kids feed and touch, and many beautiful photo opportunities. We weren't impressed with the dining choices on site at the time, but within walking distance, there are lots of options. We preferred a hotel down the beach for a wonderful breakfast buffet including lots of fresh fruit and pastries. It was a lovely walk in the morning too.
One thing I don't recommend is their spa. We each got a massage, and they were not good and WAY overpriced.
Also, get familliar with the on-sight ABC store. It has everything you need for your stay and souvenirs at reasonable prices.
