"Treated Like Royalty"

We recently stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and as we drove up we couldn't help but notice how perfect a location and how beautiful the hotel is. When we walked in the staff treated us like we were regulars. They treated us like they knew who we were and made us feel like royalty. We were quickly checked in unlike some places where you are standing at the front desk for 15 min filling out paperwork, paying and going over things.

We went up to our room and we all noticed how great the hotel smelled. Yes, we noticed the smell! It was clean, fresh and almost citrusy. The hotel was obviously doing a great job of making you feel like you were at home and not just staying in a random hotel. Our room was beautiful. Our view was of the ocean and the room was spacious and kid friendly. No sharp edges to hurt little heads and plenty of space for us to unpack our clothes. We were also impressed with how quiet everything was. We never heard anything from the outside or the rooms next to us. Oh! And the beds! Each bed has a dial so you can adjust how soft or firm you want your mattress. Who does that? It was awesome. And don't worry, each side of the bed has a dial so each person can adjust accordingly. Loved that.
The restaurant was delicious. It was buffet style, but you get to order the warm food to your own preference. I felt like french toast and my hubby wanted an omelet. We got to stand there and say, "add a little avocado, bacon, tomatoes and spinach to the omelet and can I have strawberries on my french toast?" It was so fun and the food was perfect.

In the end, while the hotel was beautiful, clean, fun, and comfortable my family walked away saying that they absolute best part about the trip was feeling so special. Anything we needed the staff was right there to get. They came to the pool to see if we were hungry, they offered to take us to our destinations in their shuttle, made dinner recommendations and reservations for us. We LOVED our stay and are itching to go back!

"Family friendly hotel!"

When I walked into the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn, I was immediately impressed.   Located in north San Diego County in the city of Carlsbad, with a western view of the Pacific Ocean, the lobby and the grounds of the hotel matched the beauty of this small beach town.  But what caught my eye was a flyer that said that the Pixar movie “UP” would be shown on a big screen on the front lawn on Saturday night.  That’s when I knew our stay was going to be exceptionally great.  This was a kid-friendly hotel, offering plenty of family activities and amenities.

PROS:
VERY FRIENDLY STAFF - Everyone I spoke to, from the front desk, to the maintenance man in the hall, and even the guest services crew, was exceptionally friendly.  They were always ready with an answer and a willingness to help.  In the afternoons, someone was always walking around with a bucket of Otter-Pops, finding guests to treat with some icy cold sweetness.

KID MOVIES ON THE BIG SCREEN – Saturday night, the wind starting blowing hard off of the ocean.  It was so strong and cold that I called the front desk, wondering how we would watch a movie out on the lawn in the wind.  The movie showing had been relocated to the ballroom, so we excitedly headed downstairs.  A friendly staff person was waiting with bags of popped corn and blankets that covered the floor.  We found our spot and enjoyed the show!

HEATED SWIMMING POOL - You may think that the sun always shines nice and hot in Southern California, but honestly, it can be downright cold near the beach many months of the year.  The pool at the Hilton Garden Inn was heated to just the right temperature.  Just warm enough that I didn’t freeze, and not too warm that we didn’t get cooled off from the sun.  We soaked in the small Jacuzzi when we got too cold and then enjoyed some rest on the plentiful deck chairs.  Towels were always available, although they were quite small and hardly went around my average size waist.  There was no kiddie pool, but my little ones enjoyed the wide steps and the shallow water.

BEAUTIFUL OCEAN VIEW - From our 3rd floor room we could see the Pacific Ocean stretching out to the west.  Almost every time I looked out there would be a line of pelicans soaring over the beach, or a surfer walking along the coast after his time in the water.  It was so beautiful!

FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE - The Carlsbad Flower Fields,  LEGOLAND, State Beaches, Carlsbad Premium Outlets, and the picturesque village of downtown Carlsbad are all within 5 miles of the Hilton Garden Inn.  A free shuttle service is available to these destinations, and anywhere within the 5 mile range.  The average wait time was about 10 – 15 minutes.  One car seat is available in the hotel, so if a family requires more than one, they need to bring their own.  Our experience with the shuttle was less than ideal because we waited for over 30 minutes and no shuttle appeared.  We wanted to take a trip to Tamarack State Beach, but we changed our minds and enjoyed the pool instead.  We found out later that the shuttle was unexpectedly delayed because of the needs of a large group that was visiting the hotel that weekend.  We were quite comfortable waiting in the pleasant lobby, though.  My kids were mesmerized by the cartoons on the TV and with the Otter-Pops in their mouths.  The friendly staff apologized for our extended wait and I do believe that our experience was out of the ordinary.

Although a little outside of shuttle range, the hotel is within a short drive of many other San Diego attractions.  The hotel is less than 30 minutes north from downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, Sea World, and the San Diego Zoo.  It is also about 45 minutes from the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park.

COMFORTABLE BEDS - New beds with a custom adjustable sleep system made sleeping a very pleasant proposition.  The queen bed that I shared with my 8-year-old son was adjustable for softness.  I chose the “optimum” firmness and settled in to sleep under clean sheets and a sheet-covered duvet.  No unclean comforters in this hotel!  Unfortunately the Garden Sleep System bed wasn’t able to prevent my son from kicking me and throwing his long limbs over me all through the night.  The next night I wised up and put the long throw pillow between us and got a much better sleep.   I was also glad for the delivery of a crib for my 2-year-old to sleep in so that I didn’t have to lug a 20-pound Pack-N-Play from home for her to use at the hotel.

COMFORTABLE ROOMS - We stayed in a room with two queen beds and it suited our family of four kids and one adult perfectly.   (Even though my husband couldn’t make this trip, he would have fit in nicely, too!)  There was plenty of room for suitcases, a crib, and toys strewn on the floor.  My kids were so excited to see some complimentary treats and a toy seal on the bed waiting for them.   I found out that during the summer months, these types of toys are given to children upon check-in.  I was glad that the refrigerator was empty so that I didn’t have to keep my children away from “non-complimentary, super expensive” treats that I didn’t want to have.  I noticed the microwave oven and coffee maker in our room, but I didn’t use them.  Free Wi-Fi internet access made checking email and searching Trekaroo for good restaurants a breeze while at the hotel.

DELICIOUS BREAKFAST BUFFET - We used our breakfast vouchers for a delicious morning meal in the downstairs restaurant.  We were seated outside in the warm sun and a waiter took our drink order and brought us a high chair.  I was already enjoying this breakfast!  The adults took turns of going inside to place their orders with the friendly cook at the grill.  He was ready to cook an egg, any style, with any ingredients on his hot grill.  My omelet was delicious.  Coupled with fresh fruit that was truly fresh and juicy, and a piece of toast, I was very satisfied.

The breakfast vouchers were given as part of the complimentary stay at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The cost of breakfast is $10.95 for adults and $5.95 for children under 12.  A very reasonable cost for a wonderful breakfast.  The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner.

CONS:
LIMITED BEACH ACCESS - The view of the ocean tempted us to find a way to reach the sand as soon as possible on our first afternoon at the Hilton Garden Inn.  We crossed the street to the ocean and found an eroded and flower strewn cliff down to the water.  No clear trail or set of stairs could be found.   We walked a little ways to the north and to the south and were able to notice some wild trails that surfers and other nimble footed travelers had used to access the beach.  With a stroller, four kids, and grandparents on this walk, it would not have been wise to try to get down.  (We might not have been able to get back up!)  Instead, we enjoyed walking along the cliff and seeing the waves, pelicans and surfers.  The view was amazing.  The friendly staff at the front desk informed me that the best place for beach access was a mile or two north, or a mile or two south.  The shuttle service or our cars were the best ways to access the beach.  I filed the information away and we enjoyed Tamarack State Beach the following day.

BOTTOM LINE:
I would highly recommend that families stay at the Hilton Garden Inn.  With its location near LEGOLAND, families will really enjoy the kid-friendly amenities of the hotel, the Pacific Ocean, and the convenient access to the park.  The friendly staff made our stay extraordinary and wonderful.  And now that I know that Hilton Garden Inns are located all over the United States, I can’t wait to stay at another one on another family adventure.

This review is based on a complimentary stay at the Hilton Garden Inn in Carlsbad.  I received no other compensation and the business owner did not state any requirements that I express a particular point of view.  The opinions I express are entirely my own.
