Do not be fooled by Highland Inn's own website descriptions of their inn. It really is not much more than a motel that has been updated. The way they describe themselves "modernist design", "warmth and intuitive service", "spa bathrooms" is total oversell. At it's core, this is really still a motel that has nicer sheets. The rooms are tiny and the walls are thin. The beds were fairly comfortable, but not luxurious. If you have kids who are sensitive sleepers, do bear in mind that you can hear people walking on the wood balcony outside your room pretty much all the time. In the winter, I am sure it's even worse when everyone is wearing heavy ski boots.
The biggest plus is the location! The location cannot be beat - right opposite the Heavenly Gondola. There is Raley's across the street, as well as a ton of restaurants and casinos within walking distance. The price we got in Oct (low season) was $79 here on Trekaroo. It's what you'd expect for $79 a night. Although breakfast is not included, there are many breakfast places on the same block. Right downstairs, you can rent bikes in the summer time. On the other side of the road, you can get all your winter ski equipment.
The reception area is tiny - nothing more than a motel reception area. Someone has definitely been chain smoking in there. The rooms themselves were clean and smoke free. The service was okay, but not particularly welcoming. Although they say they offer babysitting service, I don't know that I would feel comfortable leaving my kids here. Definitely do your own due diligence. I would have personal reservations entrusted my child to perfect strangers for a day with none of those daycare center precautions and security.
Looking for a budget option, I would consider Highland Inn. Looking for a place your family is comfortable? Look else where.
