If you're looking for a hotel from which to radiate out from try the Hampton Inn and Suites in Woodstock, VA. I stayed one night (by myself) but here is what I can tell you:
1. the hotel is newer (opened in 2009)
2. there is an indoor heated pool
3. they have 3 room sizes to pick from: the regular 1 king bed or 2 queen beds room; the king bed studio suite that has the obvious king bed and a sofa bed; and the 2 queen beds studio suite with a sofa bed. I stayed in a regular king bed room, but toured the suites (there is a king bed, whirlpool tub option as well, but its more of a romantic weekend getaway type room). The rooms are large.
4. The prices when I went with no discounts/special prices were around $90 a night for the regular rooms and around $120 a night for the suites.
5. Very friendly staff. You may or may not know, but I spend a lot of time bugging hotel staff with directions, lost toothbrush questions, closest gas station, best steak in town, etc. The two front desk clerks I dealt with happily printed maps and directions, showed me on my maps, showed me around the hotel, etc.
6. Clean room, extra pillows delivered quickly, well lit parking lot.
7. Typical free breakfast, not offensive (but typical).
8. Seems to be a great launch location for day trips (and closer) to Civil War sites, Shenandoah National Park, Endless, Crystal, Luray, and Shenandoah Caverns, and Skyline Drive. Not far off the beaten path, so easy to drive to.
9. All rooms have mini fridge, microwave, and coffe maker
