The Hale Koa is specifically for military and their guests, but if you manage to stay here you are in for a treat. The price can't be beat for a hotel directly on Waikiki beach--no streets to cross to get your toes into the sand. The rooms are clean, the balconies have great views of both Waikiki and the beach (depending on which room category you choose) and the amenities are fabulous. In Hawaii you aren't spending much time in a hotel room anyway, so it doesn't need to be fancy. We could have gone for the whole week we were there without leaving the property had we wanted to. The restaurants on site serve the same type of food you find elsewhere in Waikiki, and we never had to wait for a table. They all have kids' menus.
The location of the Hale Koa is perfect. It is right outside of the mega-touristy area of Waikiki but easily walkable to all of the local shops and restaurants. The parks on either side add a very nice buffer from the city sounds.
My kids loved the 6-and-under pool that was only a foot and a half deep. The larger pool was also very child-friendly with wide steps to play on. We went to the luau right on site, which was very affordable as far as luaus go. The beach here is perfect- not too crowded, especially before 10am. A light breeze and nearly no waves make it perfect for smaller kids.
You do have to book pretty far in advance, and I now understand why! If we ever return to Oahu, we will definitely stay at the Hale Koa again.
My family and I stayed here for the last week of the four years that we lived in Hawaii and it was wonderful. We got two adjoining rooms for the amount you would pay an a different hotel and it's in a great location. There are two different pools, one just for toddlers, which my kids never left. The larger pool is HUGE and they would serve fruity drinks and food to you poolside so we never had to leave.
We love staying at the Hale Koa. The only downfall is, it is so popular, you have to make reservations well in advanced a lot of times. But reservations are easily made online for those that are eligible (military personnel). The pool is awesome! The view is great as well. The staff is really friendly and it is right at the beach and walking distance to everything downtown.
Granted, the Hale Koa is a hotel for military and their guests only, but it is a wonderful place to stay. The location on the beach in Waikiki is stunning and withing walking distance a myraid of restaurants and places to visit.
The hotel has simple, but well maintained rooms, a BX shoppette, a hair salon, and three restaurants on site.
There are two pools to choose from and easy access to the beach. We have found that their luau is one of our favorite on the island and the entertainment impressive!
Rates are based on rank and VERY affordable. If you are military and heading to Hawaii, this is the place you want to stay!
After going to Hawaii a dozen times, this was my first time staying at the Hale Koa (military guests only). It was just okay. Nothing special. The rooms were updates, which was nice and they had a little Bx which was the best part in all honesty. They had mini refrig/coolers in the room. They actually tell you not to store dairy products in them, so for people with children, not so good. They keep things cool, just not cold. I need to keep an ice pack frozen for our day trips with formula and the refrig/cooler didnt do the job. Kinda frustrating. I also wish they had microwaves, but they didnt. Overall, I would much prefer to stay in a Ohana hotel (which offers great military rates) with a kitchenette.
