"A Land Of Enchantment"

If I could go back to being a child and design a hotel, this is, in many ways what I would design.  The massive wolf statues and outdoor water park lets you know as soon as you pull up, that this hotel was created with families in mind.

Walking into the rustic, forest themed lobby, the first thing that caught my eye was the giant tree house half-way between the check-in counter and the back wall which has been uniquely transformed into a huge clock tower with friendly forest creatures.   My kids were off in a dash up the tree house steps to get a bird’s eye view of the lodge’s lobby.  To our left was an enormous glass wall peering directly into a massive 1 million gallon water park designed specifically for families of all ages!  The guest services clerk handed us plastic bracelets that had our room key embedded into them.  What a smart move!  We didn’t have to carry around anything extra from the hotel or have to worry about losing a key in the water park!  She also informed us of the many different amenities they have for their little guests including a Wolf Walk, Story Time, and a Kid’s Club.

Our Room

After checking-in we practically ran to our rooms through forest-painted mural hallways and pictures of wolves, treasure chests, and kids with magic wands.  The Kid’s Cabin Suite was decked out in a cabin motif and included a fort-like area with wood cabin walls, three bunk beds, a flat-screen tv, and a Nintendo control!  My kids knew that this was their domain and immediately started climbing up the bunk beds and claiming their space on the fort.  The rest of the room was a cabin design as well with wood logs framing the mirrors and pictures of wolves on the walls.  We had our own tv perched on top of a large wood dresser.  In the bathroom, I noticed a large 4 oz. shampoo/conditioner bottle accompanied by a lotion, and a pink, bubble gum scented, body wash for kids!  I’ve never been to a hotel that provides for its littlest guests like that!  Even the port-a-crib was brought with a wolf-patterned sheet.  We shoved a few leftovers into the mini-fridge that’s provided, threw on our swim gear and were off to the water park!

The Water Park

Before rushing into the thrilling, fort-style, full-size indoor water park, two smiling lifeguards were standing guard at the doors giving high fives, checking the kid’s height and giving them wristbands accordingly.  My seven-year old, Caleb, was thrilled to be over 48” and able to go on any and all of the rides!  My three-year old, Austin, didn’t really care, he was just happy to get a green bracelet slapped on his wrist, and my 5 year old with special needs, Timmy, was so excited to be entering into an area filled with splashing water and whooshing slides, he almost knocked everyone out of the way to get through!

The clean water park was already pretty filled up and every table was taken, but we found a few chairs, threw our stuff down on them, and headed off.  None of us planned on spending any time sitting down anyway!  We all headed to Fort Mackenzie first, a fort with a giant splash pad, water cannons, buckets of water being dropped all around, and a giant 1000 gallon bucket at the top of the fort that dumps all of its water out on the people lined up underneath!   It also has two medium size slides that Caleb, Austin, and I had a blast riding for hours!  My husband, Adam, took Timmy and Mylee-Jo (our 10 month old) through the fort to splash in the water and watch the dumping bucket.  We also really enjoyed floating on Crooked Creek (the lazy river), conquering the waves in Slap Tail Pond (wave pool), and splashing around in the little kid’s area.

If you start getting hungry, don’t worry about heading to your room and drying off, there’s a poolside café with the normal options like hamburgers, hotdogs, and French fries, or healthy choice options like sandwiches, salads, and apple slices.  Plan on spending around $7-8 dollars per person, but you could go as low as $5.

We tested out the restrooms several times while we were there and are happy to say, they were clean and welcoming every time we visited.  I also love that they have a family restroom with 2 separate stalls for parents to dress and change their kids together.

Hotel Amenities

Story hour is a fun time that starts out with forest critters singing a song about conservation and mother earth.   The song seemed a little long for the age of the kids that were there and didn’t hold their attention for the whole time.  It was also pretty quiet, so it was hard to hear a lot of the words.  Still, there’s something magical about watching a bunch of stuffed critters, Simon, and Little Yellow Feather, sing and interact.  After the song ends (about 15 minutes) a wolf comes out and reads the kids a bedtime story!  Unfortunately, we were given the wrong time for the actual story hour by a staffer, so we missed it, but we did get to hear the clock tower song.

A special event you definitely don’t want to miss is the Wolf Walk!  The kids gather in front of the clock tower for the clock tower song from the critters, and then a Kid’s Club staff member comes out and walks with the kids around the lobby telling them about the critters, giving them facts, teaching them to howl like wolves, and gives them all a piece of paper to make an origami wolf to take home!  It’s the perfect way to start out your day!

The hotel activities are somewhat driven not only around a conservation theme, but a sorcery/magic theme as well.  For $16.99 you can buy a magic want that lights up and guides the kids throughout the hotel giving them quests, lighting up pictures, opening magic chests, and more.  You’ll definitely get your exercise as you climb up and down 8 flights of stairs (you could take the elevators) and wind through the forested hallways.  One mom commented that it was very thorough and every child we saw taking part in it was having a great time!

Northern Lights Arcade is the perfect addition to the hotel for kids!  The large room is lit with black lights making the special carpet underneath your feet glow with bright colors, bringing the room to life!  All of the games are between 1-4 tokens each, but don’t worry if there’s a crowd, the room is large enough and has enough to do that you won’t be waiting in line for long!  Cash out your tickets and receive prizes like candy, bouncy balls, pencils, stuffed animals, or other fun, special treats!

Teens have to check out gr8_space, an area designed specifically for them!  Teens have access to internet, music and gaming stations like Nintendo Wii and Xbox360, they can dance and sing the night away to karaoke, or grab a snack and lounge in one of the comfortable modern chairs.

If you have a girl who likes being pampered, Scooops Kid Spa has facials, manicures, and pedicures designed especially for them!  If you would like something for yourself, Element’s Spa is open for facials, mani/pedi’s, massage, reflexology, and more.

If you have a sweet tooth, you have to visit Bear Paw Sweets & Eats!  You’ll smell the delicious aroma of baked goodies wafting down the hallway as it gently lures you in.  My kids loved the cupcakes, and I was a huge fan of the dark chocolate covered s’mores, can you say heavenly?!

Could Be Better

With a lodge so fantastic and well planned, it was really a shame the beds weren’t caught up to the quality of the rest of the hotel.  My husband and I both were very disappointed by our lack of comfort; he ended up sleeping on the couch!  I even talked to a few other guests to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, and they echoed the same sentiments.  The lodge was fantastic, but the beds were not.  I would definitely recommend bringing your own pillows for your stay, it might help a little.  That is the main reason why I took away a star.  In all other aspects, this lodge is superb!

Overall

Great Wolf Lodge truly is the mecca for family entertainment!  They’ve thought of pretty much everything possible to make sure you and your family will have a comfortable, vibrant vacation without ever having to leave the grounds.  The idea behind an indoor water park is genius!  I didn’t have to worry about reapplying sunscreen, weather my kids were getting overheated, or cold weather.  They do have a giant outdoor water park as well for the summer months, but I loved the indoor one so much, I want to go back!  Whether you live in the area or hours away, you have to plan a trip to Great Wolf Lodge, you won’t be disappointed!

Other Helpful Hints

If you’re over 48”, you can ride all of the slides.  If you’re between 48”-42” you can ride them all, but you have to have a parent with you on the family slides, and if you’re under 42” you can ride the slides in the little kid’s area or the bigger slides at Fort Mackenzie (with a parent nearby), but not the family slides (they are really, really fast!).

Bring swim diapers with you!  The Lodge charges $2.50 a diaper, which adds up fast if you have a few kids!

Towels are provided, so there’s no need to bring yours from home.

Bring lots of spending money!  The lodge is well priced, but there are a lot of great activities that cost extra.  However, if you do decide to keep costs low, there’s plenty you can do on a budget that will keep your family completely entertained!

"Pricey, but so fun!"

We staying just one night at the Great Wolf Lodge and our boys absolutely loved it.  The indoor water park was tons of fun and kept them entertained for hours.   We had Dad run out and bring in pizza to eat in the hotel room for dinner to save $ and that worked out really well.  Our boys are young enough that they thought the nightly story time was really fun.  They also loved the wand game and I thought it was great that so many of the clues were on the staircases so they had to get exercise running up and down (and kept the elevators free for hotel guests.)  We can't wait to go back again!

"OMG - You have to visit Great Wolf Lodge!"

We have stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine with our kiddos.  The Lodge is awesome!  It has lots of fun things for the kiddos to do -- there's an arcade, and also story-time for the younger kids.  The waterpark is absolutely awesome! Fun for all ages.

"GREAT Vacation!"

We have both school age and preschool kids.  This is the perfect getaway spot for us.  There are life guards everywhere so you can be totally confident that the kids are being watched.  There is plenty of fun for the pre swimmers to the little fish in your family.  Be prepared for crazy prices on the food, but other than that it is well worth the visit!

"Lots of fun, but definitely does damage to your wallet"

We were in Texas for a week after school let out with the kids and hit up the Great Wolf Lodge for 3 days/2nights in June. We had done an indoor waterpark in Wisconsin Dells and this Great Wolf Lodge was not as large, but still fun.

The rates are cheaper during the week and we were traveling from Tue-Thursday and scored a rate of $149.00 per night for a family suite. The room was large, although with our family of 6 (me, hubby and 4 boys ranging from 6-12) it gets quite cozy. The room had 2 queen beds, and a full size sofa sleeper - plus a fridge and microwave. Everything is centered around the kids which meant they loved it here!

The food on-site is definitely theme-park fare from hot dogs to burgers and fries. Convenient and fine for lunch if you're already in the park, but certainly expensive. You really never have to leave the property unless you want to, but I would recommend eating off-site to save a couple of bucks and try something different.

Everyone had a great time at the water park every day, and the kids loved MagiQuest. The game is active for 4 days, so buy it early and it is a good value, and keeps the kids busy. Water park was crowded, but not crazy. We typically didn't have to wait in line, but in the primetime 1:30-3pm hour, we waited for 15 minutes for a couple of rides.

There's an evening story time which our younger kids liked (12 year old was a bit bored).

Our family is quickly becoming indoor waterpark junkies and love it. if you're in Texas, I'd definitely recommend making a trip out to the GWL especially in those crazy hot 100 degree summer days.
