"Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge—Family perfection"

Granlibakken (Norwegian for “hillside sheltered by fir trees) is a unique destination for Bay Area families looking for a carefree way to enjoy winter activities in the Lake Tahoe area. Devoid of casinos and tour busses, Granlibakken resort is more down to earth than some of its neighbors around the lake. It’s 74-acre property feels like a peaceful village and was just about the right fit for my family. Additionally, over the next couple of days, we came to realize that this peaceful village had a number of tricks up its sleeve.

The condominium style accommodations spread throughout the 74-acre resort include all the comforts of home making vacationing with kids an easy endeavor. Our suite included a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a separate bedroom and a large living area with a fireplace, access to a covered deck and a Murphy bed. My family appreciated the flexibility and spaciousness of the accommodations. It was nice to spend time in front of the fireplace after the kids went to sleep in the separate bedroom. An added bonus was the view of the giant icicle from the bedroom window.

Breakfast and dinner are available in the main lodge. On our first night, we enjoyed a great dinner at the warm and inviting Cedar House Pub. Live music and a roaring fire during our meal set the tone for the weekend. In the mornings, we couldn’t get enough of Granlibakken ‘s yummy breakfast buffet before hitting the sledding hill. Trick up sleeve #1: the Mexican food available for lunch at the ski hut. Don’t sleep on the tortilla soup. It is the perfect thing to eat while thawing off from a dozen sled runs. We also took full advantage of the full kitchen in our suite since our family can’t seem to survive without our own coffee, milk and snacks, available 24-hours a day.

The one run ski hill and sledding hill are perfect for families with young kids. The convenience of not having to hassle with parking and crowds made the snow play all the more fun. Not to mention being able to get back to our suite at the end of the day before the chance of a meltdown.

One afternoon, while the boys and I got in our last sled runs, my wife snuck away to the Lighthouse Spa, which is located right at the foot of the ski hill. The hour-long massage was a perfect end to her already relaxing day. I suppose this is Trick up sleeve #2.

Trick up sleeve #3: the resort is home to the Treetop Adventure Park – basically a jungle gym tucked high up in the redwood trees for ages 4 to adult – in other words – totally completely awesome. Our older son and I conquered our fears on this course. It was invigorating and really fun.

Granlibakken makes for a perfect family getaway. If your kids are already comfortable bombing down double black diamonds the resort still makes a great home base for exploring the neighboring resorts while still offering plenty of thrills on the sledding hill and on the Treetop Adventure Park. For my family, the activities were perfect. We all had tons of fun and each of us had a chance to push the limits of what felt scary. Cool. Granlibakken is definitely at the top of my list the next time we need a dose of Lake Tahoe.

Granlibakken Resort and Conference Center provided my family with complimentary lodging for this review. They did not request that I express any particular point of view and my reviews always reflect my honest opinions.

"Nothing Short of Perfect"

Granlibakken Resort, on Tahoe's west shore, is located half a mile from Tahoe City and reigns supreme as a family-friendly mecca of fun. Bay Area residents should pay close attention to the resort’s advertised $139 midweek rate and $156 weekend rate for 2 adult skiers through the resort's Ski and Boarder's Package. Rates are per person, per night and include:

• Lodging at Granlibakken
• Hot breakfast buffet
• Adult lift ticket at one of 8 resorts
• Complimentary shuttle service to the local ski areas

* Lift ticket can be swapped for equipment and use of the trails at Tahoe Cross Country Center or a $65 spa credit toward services at Granlibakken’s onsite Lighthouse Spa.

Non-skiers pay an extra person charge of $25 or $27 when sharing the same room with two skiers, this rate includes breakfast. Children under 7 are free of charge; kids above the age of 8 are charged the non-skier fee.

After you subtract out the average cost of 4 lift tickets and 2 days worth of family breakfast, it’s like paying just $102 a night for lodging with free parking and free WiFi for a family of four with two kids under 7.

My family, two children ages 3 and 7, stayed in a two bedroom, two story townhome with a living room/dining area, full kitchen and fireplace. Our townhome featured the following amenities:

• Cable television with DVD
• Complimentary hot breakfast buffet
• In-room coffee maker
• Fully stocked kitchen (minus the food)

Granlibakken's hot breakfast buffet is delicious and the relaxed atmosphere is perfect for families with young children. On Sunday, my son woke up desiring bacon but the breakfast buffet was only serving sausage. When I told my son there was no bacon, he started to cry at our table. A member of Granlibakken’s exceptional staff noticed our dilemma and asked the cooks to fry bacon just for my son, AND THEY DID!

Granlibakken Resort and Conference Center provided my family with complimentary lodging for this review. They did not request that I express any particular point of view and my reviews always reflect my honest opinions.

"Woodsy resort; perfect for families"

We stayed at the Granlibakken during the summer for a Family Nature Summit (FamilySummits.org).

It isn't super fancy or brand new, but they work hard to keep it updated and the service was excellent. The rooms are comfortable and pretty spacious. They have townhome and condo units seemed newer (with kitchens) which would be a great home base for families exploring Tahoe. It had a large outdoor eating area for our Summit.  I think their prices are reasonable for what they offer.

There are tons of places to explore without leaving the property. There's a trail that winds around the resort, a fire road that leads to the Truckee River and eventually the lake.  Great place for birdwatching, so bring your binoculars. Our Summit even added a Discovery Trail for kids in the forest.  It has tennis courts, a pool, and small game room.

It would be a great place for a family reunion.

There are a lot of stairs if you are climbing from one part of the resort to another. I liked this part, but if you can't do "strenuous" then maybe pick a flatter location? Or ask for a room in the main lodge?
