I live in La Jolla and because I write a blog that includes local topics, I decided to stay in several hotels around town.
I did not realize (I should have!) that staying at the Grande Colonial means that you have round the clock access to food from NINE-TEN, one of the best restaurants in town. In fact, I've never taken my 4 year old to NINE-TEN and was surprised to find that they have a very reasonably priced kids menu. My daughter asked to eat in the restaurant several times. NINE-TEN provides the room service menu. Get the lemon ricotta pancakes and thank me later. The other must order is the half-baked chocolate cake and I nearly fell over when I saw it on the room service menu. Delicious. If you feel like venturing out of the hotel to eat, there are amazing restaurants all up and down Prospect Street at all price points.
We had a suite facing the Children's Pool, a beach area known for seals. This was in the building with the suites, which are converted apartments, I believe. There's a bedroom, living room (though open to the bedroom) and a bathroom with a very large dressing area. They provide a decent sized empty mini fridge so you can bring home leftovers or a few groceries. WiFi is free, though I had some issues with the signal in our building a few times.
This is an old hotel full of tons of history. The room decor is a little bit dated but it fits the quaintness of the hotel. There is also a round swimming pool that kids can swim in where you can order food from NINE-TEN.
This is probably the most well-rounded location in La Jolla. You can easily walk to the beach, to excellent shopping and restaurants. You don't need a car unless you're headed out of La Jolla.
The staff at the hotel were all very nice. It's also very quiet other than a little bit of humming from the street. Families will want to make sure their room is not too close to the restaurant because of late evening chatter.
I really recommend this hotel, because it's also great value for the area - very nice and reasonably priced for the area. My daughter loved it too.
* My stay was complimentary but for my own website, not Trekaroo. Just thought I'd share here too!
