We checked in very late at night due to a delayed flight. The Rose Bar had clearly turned into a club of some sort. Loads of beautiful people were in attendance. Let's just say I felt underdressed in my airplane clothes!
Our suite was blissfully quiet, though my early rising husband said that he heard our neighbors roll home at 4am. The hotel attracts celebrities and wealthy socialites. I can see why.
The decor is amazing from the art to the vibrant colors. The attention to detail was mind boggling. Even the red crystal etched glasses in the mini bar totally added to the eclectic vibe. We didn't have a bathtub, but other rooms do. Check the hotel website for floor plans. Also, the sink area in our bathroom did not have much of any counter space for toiletry storage.
You might also think that the staff would be stuffy in a place like this. So not true! Everyone was incredibly nice, beyond helpful, and solicitous of my 4-year-old daughter. She loved this hotel and asked to stay past the 5 days we booked.
The food and drinks in the hotel are expensive but I think in line with similar hotels in NYC. You are getting quality and we enjoyed every meal, especially our dinner at Maialino. My sister in law has lived in NYC for years and it's her favorite restaurant. There were a few kids, but I didn't spot a kids menu. There's pasta, bread and cheeses on the menu so you could probably wing it. Speaking of kids menus, breakfast at Gramercy Terrace is expensive because there is no kids menu. My daughter asked for the continental breakfast everyday and it was $30. There is a pricey kids menu on the room service menu.
The hotel is conveniently located in a lovely, relatively quiet part of New York City. If you forget anything, you can walk a block or two to pick it up. Lots of convenience stores are nearby, as is the subway. We managed to take the subway everywhere, which surprised me.
It was a pretty flawless stay with my only regret not going to the spa. We ran out of time. I was on a media stay and I sampled their family fun pack which included passes to Top of the Rock, Central Park Carousel, Central Park Zoo, and Children's Museum of Manhattan. I'm not sure preschoolers are meant for Top of the Rock, but it is a really awesome 360 degree view of the city. Just bring some entertainment as we had to wait in line to get up to the top even with an assigned time.
The bottom line is that if you enjoy chic boutique hotels, and don't have rambunctious kids that are going to put their hands all over the artwork, this would be a great hotel for you.
*I received a complimentary night as well as tickets to Top of the Rock, Central Park Carousel and Zoo, Children's Museum of Manhattan.
this hotel is nice and well-located in the city. can be over-priced but well worth the spend if you want to stay in a great family-friendly neighborhood. good place for kids to stay and will provide you with extra needs like cribs. just a few blocks from union square, where lots of shopping and all the sights are just a subway ride away.
My husband and I recently stayed here on a visit to NYC. We stayed in a suite and had plenty of room. They provided a metal crib, nice but metal, with lovely linens for him to sleep on. Having a separate room, divided by thick glass doors and heavy velvet drapes, he was able to stay on his sleep schedule while we stayed up in the other room. It was a large room, especially compared to other rooms in the city. Having lived in NYC before, we know that size is an issue but the Gramercy doesn't cheat you in their suites! And the staff is very friendly! I'm not sure about taking older kids and what entertainment would be like for them, which is why I gave it 4 starts but for a small family of 3, it was perfect!
