We loved the Fort Seward Condos when we stayed in Haines because it offered a family a HOME setting to stay at. Bedrooms, furnishings, televisions and fully-stocked kitchens that were all a very "homey" setting. This was great for our child at the mid-way point of our long journey - to have something other than a hotel bed to climb into at night.
There was a VHS library that even had some Disney movies to choose from that made the very rare bad weather day a breeze.
We found the location to be incredibly interesting and convenient (pretty much all of Haines is walkable if you give yourself a few extra minutes to do so) but walking around the Fort Seward condos neighborhood was extra fun (and educational) because it is a historic fort. We stayed in the lower level of the captain's quarters. Learning the history of the fort, the town, and some of the influential families that still live there was a treat! For those more interested in modern influential families, one of the guys from the reality TV hit Gold Rush lives in a Haines retirement home! (Neat bit of trivia for such a small town!)
Comfortable beds, spacious living and totally hands-off management of the Fort Seward Condos were all very nice parts of our stay. It actually was a home away from home and we recalled while sipping our morning coffee gazing out at the AMAZING view that we'd do an entire vacation right on that front porch if given the opportunity!
The sweeping green lawns were great open spaces for kids to run and roll and play. We didn't find a single "need" that wasn't met - whether it was a toaster or WiFi, we were totally covered while at the Fort Steward Condos.
The rooms were all quite clean and handwritten notes here and there from the owner/caretaker about quirks with a toilet or a light or a reminder to remember the keys so you don't get locked out, etc. were all so fabulously friendly that it felt like staying at Grandma's - not a vacation rental! We had a splendid stay!
After two nights, our only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer! I also did find a few small spiders here and there, but I loathe them so I'm convinced they follow me - so no faults to the property there!
Disclosure: My family stayed as complimentary guests of the Fort Steward Condos and the Haines CVB. We loved our experience regardless of this fact. It rocks for families.
