Forest Houses Resort is a collection of about a dozen cabins, varying in size, along Oak Creek about 15 minutes north of Sedona. This is a perfect set-up for families staying in the area to explore for a few days, as you get a full kitchen and living room, plus outdoor space, too. Note that in the summer there is a 4-night minimum stay, and cabins can be booked up to a year in advance. (Which means they're often booked solid, early in the season.)
We were lucky enough to stay here for 4 nights in June, and had a wonderful stay in "The Barn" cabin. The king size bed was at the top of a spiral staircase, while the kids slept in two twins in the living area below. (It was a large enough sitting area that the beds didn't hog up too much of the space during the day.)
Although located along Highway 89, you are removed enough that we didn't have issues with traffic noise at all. The best part was being able to walk down a short path to access Oak Creek itself -- it was wonderful to wade and play in the creek, and since it wasn't too deep, the water was much warmer than downriver at Slide Rock State Park, where it feels much colder. And of course, you can listen to the burble of the creek at night. (Some cabins are located directly on the creek, ours was set back a bit.) We also had a small yard & patio table for playing & relaxing after a day of exploring.
This is one of those hidden gems that I almost hesitate to share, as I'd hate for it to get too popular! It's one of the best family lodging choices I've ever made, and I hope we can return again sometime.
