This upscale "camping" resort is great for families who want to experience the natural beauty of the California coast without the effort of really roughing it. El Capitan has something for everyone -- easy or challenging hikes into the foothills, a walk to one of the most striking beaches in California, a pool and playground, llamas, horses, bike riding -- it really can't be beat. You can stay in a safari tent equipped with comfortable beds with luxurious bed linens, down comforters, and daily maid service. Or, you can opt for a cabin with small kitchen and plenty of sleeping options. We loved the fact that resort staff will drop off firewood and fire starters to make it easy to build a campfire for s'mores. There's also a great snack bar and gift shop with delicious breakfasts. We stayed during Thanksgiving when they offered to cater our holiday meal and deliver it to our cabin. Not only was the food delicious but they included lovely table decorations to make our Thanksgiving very elegant in an outdoor setting. El Capitan is a delightful family alternative to the fancier resorts of Santa Barbara and a great outdoor experience.
If you like the outdoors, but don't like the "roughing it" part of camping, this is a great place. There are very nice cabins with jacuzzi tubs or yurts if you want to be a bit more rustic. Having access to the pool was great. As well as the great little market for picking up the necessities. (You know, things like firewood, smores, and of course lattés and breakfast burritos.) You can walk to the other side of the 101 (where the camping is much more rustic and much cheaper) and have access to the beach. This is really a kid-friendly place, with access to the beautiful scenery via short (and longer) hikes into the mountains. Some of the hikes have great views of the ocean and are perfect for picnic lunches. In the summer, they also have live music on the weekends and big bonfires. A lot of fun and a place we would definitely go back again.
An oceanside retreat only 17 miles from
downtown Santa Barbara, this property
on 300 acres features cozy cabins and
safari-canvas tents. A kids’ camp, botanical hikes, massages, swimming pool,
campfires, and outdoor summer concerts
are highlights, along with bicycling.
And it’s only a half mile from the beach
for water sports. A grocery store, gift
shop, and deli are here, too. Absolutely
ideal for families.
